Importance

In a proud Hispanic household, we use Birria as a common traditional cuisine during the holidays. Being away from family through college is difficult, and so making this meal allows me to feel comfortable during stressful times.

The body may act like it is starving even after eating, causing the liver to keep making glucose while fat breakdown, beta-oxidation, and ketone production increase.

Birria can be healthy in moderation, especially for a young adult female who is moderately active, because it provides protein, iron, zinc, energy, and about 12.9g of fiber, which is around 46% of a 28g daily fiber goal.

Birria can be made healthier by using leaner meat, skimming fat from the broth, watching portion sizes, and adding fiber-rich sides like beans, salsa, onions, cilantro, or vegetables.

Birria should not be eaten in large portions every day because depending on the meat, broth, and serving size, it can be high in saturated fat, sodium, and calories.
