What Happens Now?

With the exception of a surge of 35% increase from 2021-2022, the population has reached a historic low at around ~12,000.

Start of Decline

With the implementation of herbicide-resistant crops, monarch butterflies have declined down to ~400,000

The Decline Steadies

Overwintering sites and climate change has further decreased the population down to ~200,000.

The Beginning

The overwintering count started in 1997, with the count being around ~1,200,000 for the monarch butterfly's population.
