Geography of Asia

A large landmass extends into the Indian Ocean from the continent of Asia. The Indian subcontinent is separated from the rest of Asia by the Himalayas Mountains. They are 2,000 miles long from the north to south. The climate in South Asia has three seasons. In October through February, it is mild and cool. In March through May, it is very hot. Then, from June through September, the monsoon season arrives. The monsoon season is a rainy period of time. The monsoon season causes flooding. The flooding leads to refreshed and fertile land. There are three important rivers in the subcontinent. The Ganges River is over 1,500 miles long and flows across the northern part of the subcontinent. When it floods, it creates fertile land. China is positioned between the Gobi Desert and the Taklamakan Desert in the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and Himalaya Mountains in the south. The Yellow River to the north and the Yangtze River to the south provided fresh water, food, fertile soil, and transportation. With deserts and mountains separating China from other civilizations they developed independently and were allowed to flourish with strong inventions, religions, and cultural traditions.
