Southern and Modernist Literature
Ernest Hemingway and Eudora Welty
For Today:
We will review some history surrounding World War I, and those soldiers that returned from the war. We will talk about the modernist movement. We will talk a little bit about Ernest Hemingway. We will read a portion of "A Soldier's Home" by Ernest Hemingway. We will review characterization in "A Soldier's Home."
World War 1
- World War I lasted from 1914–1918 and involved many European nations divided into two main sides: the Allies and the Central Powers.
- The United States entered the war in 1917, helping shift momentum toward the Allies.
- Fighting often took place in trenches, leading to slow, brutal conditions known as trench warfare.
- New and deadly technologies (like machine guns, gas attacks, and tanks) made the war especially destructive.
- The war caused massive loss of life and left lasting physical and emotional impacts on soldiers and societies.
World War 1
- Many soldiers came home from World War I feeling emotionally numb or disconnected.
- It was often hard for them to relate to people who hadn’t experienced the war.
- Mental health struggles (what we now call Post-traumatic stress disorder) were common but not well understood.
- Families expected them to quickly return to “normal” life, creating pressure and frustration.
- There was a gap between civilians’ ideas of war and the reality soldiers had lived through.
The Modernist Literary Movement
- a break from traditional conventions of writing
- resulted from a loss of confidence in traditional values, encouraged writers to embrace less conventional ways of writing.
- a focus on minimalistic language
- uses minimalistic writing, forcing you as the reader to figure out the majority of the context and information hidden beneath the surface
- an exploration of war and trauma
- Instead of highlighting the heroic aspects of war and other traumatic events, modernist works focus on the psychological scars endured by individuals and society as a result of conflict.
Ernest Hemingway
- Served as an ambulance driver during World War I, which influenced much of his writing.
- Known for a simple, direct writing style with short sentences and minimal description.
- Often wrote about war, loss, and disillusionment.
- His characters frequently struggle with emotions they don’t openly express.
- Famous works include The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms.
Now, let's read some of "A Soldier's Home" (Only available in the edio lesson). (Pages 1-3)

Character Motivations
Character Traits
- Through Krebs’ thoughts and actions, Hemingway presents him as isolated, disillusioned, and emotionally detached after returning from war.
- Krebs avoids talking about the war, and when he does, “no one wanted to hear about it,” emphasizing his separation from others.
- He becomes disillusioned with people’s reactions, realizing he must lie “to be listened at all,” which creates a growing “distaste” for both the war and those around him.
- Because of his isolation and disillusionment, Krebs seeks understanding and struggles to form a clear sense of identity after the war.
- He wants to share his experiences honestly, but since he must lie to be heard, he develops a “reaction against the war” and a growing “distaste.”
- Krebs longs to feel “cool and clear inside” again, but civilian life feels dishonest and confusing, leaving him feeling lost.
