Your editor sends you to report on the break in at the Watergate building, which is also the Democratic National Committee's headquarters. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but you're willing to do some digging.

It's just another day as a junior reporter at The Washington Post. You know that a big story could make your career... but only the top reporters get the big stories. Looks like you're going to have to find one yourself.

Head to the courthouse

The burglars were caught right away, of course. But... that's weird... they had bugging (listening devices) with them? And you know their attorney is expensive. Maybe this isn't an ordinary burglary...

Listen in on the testimony

You listen to one of the burglars, James W. McCord, jr. He tells the judge that he recently retired from a government job. Judge: Where did you work? McCord: *whispers* CIA.

Do some digging on McCord

You discover that James McCord has accepted a new job - he's the security coordinator for President Richard Nixon's Committee to Re-Elect the President, or the CRP. You start calling it CREEP. And there sure does seem to be something creepy here... but you'll need to talk to sources to learn more.

No way. I've gotten in enough trouble already - you'll have to find someone else more willing to talk.

James W. McCord, jr.

Sure, there's lots I can tell you... but my career is at risk, so you can't put my name in the papers. If you want to talk to me, you'll need to give me a signal, and we'll meet in a parking garage. Sound good?

Secret Informant

Top-ranking government official

No

Yes

The burglars were paid from a "slush fund" (that's a large supply of money used for illegal purposes) run by Nixon's Committee to Re-elect the President, or CREEP. They planned the whole thing.

Secret Informant

Top-ranking government official

Whoa! So... case closed, right?

How do I know I can trust you?

You don't. Since my identity has to be a secret, you'll need a lot more proof than just my word. Keep digging... and follow the money.

We can talk, but you can't use my name. I used to be the treasurer of Nixon's Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP), but I resigned. I'll tell you why...

Hugh W. Sloan, jr.

Treasurer of CREEP

Only if I can use your name

Tell me more!

They were doing some shady stuff. They have a "slush fund" of money that they use for all sorts of... suspicious purposes. I didn't want to be involved in that.

Hugh W. Sloan, jr.

Treasurer of CREEP

Can you tell me about the Watergate break-in?

Who is in charge of the slush fund?

No one ever told me about Watergate. But I was ordered to pay a man named G. Gordon Liddy $199,000 to set up an “intelligence network." Now he's been arrested for the break-in. I wonder what that "intelligence network" really was...

Hugh W. Sloan, jr.

Treasurer of CREEP

Back to sources

The people running the slush fund are H.R. Haldeman (Nixon's Chief of Staff), John Mitchell (the Attorney General of the U.S. and head of CREEP), and Maurice Stans (U.S. Secretary of Commerce and CREEP's head of finance).

No way. It's too dangerous. Best of luck to you.

Kenneth M. Dahlberg

What can you tell us about the Watergate break-in?

What's up with this check?

I cash a lot of checks... but I remember that. It was a donation to Nixon's campaign, so I gave it to Maurice Stans, the head of finance for Nixon's Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP).

Kenneth M. Dahlberg

How did it end up in the bank account of one of the Watergate burglars?

Sure...

Watergate? The hotel in Washington? Oh right, I heard there was a break-in. No, I couldn't tell you anything about that. What a weird question...

Kenneth M. Dahlberg

Back to sources

It DID? I can't explain that. That would have been Maurice Stans, not me. But he's the U.S. Secretary of Commerce... I find it hard to believe he'd do something like that...

Kenneth M. Dahlberg

Back to sources

Hey, believe what you want. Are you even a reporter? Don't call me again. *beeeeeeeeeeeep*

Kenneth M. Dahlberg

Back to sources

What do you want? You already know everything you need to know. You heard in court that I watched the whole thing, and that the burglars had my contact info. So what if I was involved with CREEP? That means nothing.

G. Gordon Liddy

If CREEP is innocent, prove it.

Did other people in CREEP know about the break-in?

My father didn't raise a snitch or a rat. I'm not talking.

G. Gordon Liddy

Back to sources

You're just a journalist, I don't have to prove anything to you! Get lost.

G. Gordon Liddy

Back to sources

Please, listen to me! Everyone thinks I'm crazy, but I'm not. Something is going on with CREEP, and it's worse than you think.

Martha Mitchell

How do you know?

What has CREEP done?

They have something to do with that break-in at Watergate. That guy, James McCord, is CREEP's security coordinator - and my daughter's bodyguard!

Martha Mitchell

How do you know?

So what?

My husband, John Mitchell, is the Attorney General of the U.S. That basically means he's the "top cop." But he's also the head of CREEP.

Martha Mitchell

Why does everyone think you're crazy?

This all seems like a coincidence.

I suspected they were up to something, so I told my husband I would call a reporter. Then, I was KIDNAPPED! When I tried to escape, I was DRUGGED!

Martha Mitchell

Why are you telling me all this?

Yeah, you are crazy...

No! Please! I swear it's true! Believe me!

Martha Mitchell

Back to sources

At first I defended my husband. But in the middle of all this, he left me... He's a crook. I hope you take him down.

I didn't mean to get into all this. I just keep track of the money for Nixon's campaign. It was supposed to be a regular job...

Judy Hoback Miller

Judy Hoback Miller

What do you know?

I saw proof - hard proof - that CREEP had an illegal fund that was paying money to people involved in the Watergate break-in. But now all that evidence has been destroyed.

Judy Hoback Miller

Who was being paid from the slush fund?

Why didn't you tell the FBI?

I did tell the FBI! But they're not doing anything about it! And now, I think my phones are being tapped... I'm afraid to say more.

Judy Hoback Miller

Don't be ridiculous.

Can you give me initials of who was paid from the slush fund?

I'm afraid to tell you. I think my phones are tapped...
