Below are excerpts from Archie Jewell's letter to his sister.

  • "...she went down little by little by the bows then at last her stern went right up in the air and then she went right down straight.."
  • "...we was in the boats for six hours before the steam boat came to us we was very thankful to get onboard
  • " think it is a shame to let them big boats go to sea with such a small lot of boats, had there been boats enough nearly every one would have been saved. If the watertights [sic] doors had worked she would not have went down..."
  • "it was a fine night...not an air of wind and the water as smooth as glass"

Diary elements

Dear Diary, I asked my mother to tell me the Titanic story again today. I was only ten months old, so I don’t remember it—but she does. She said that night was full of fear and confusion. When the ship hit the iceberg, people rushed everywhere. She couldn’t get back to our room, and then someone suddenly grabbed me and threw me overboard. She thought I was gone forever. But I wasn’t. A woman named Mrs. Nye caught me and cared for me. For three days, my mother didn’t know I was alive. Then, on the rescue ship, I reached out for her—and she found me again. It’s strange to think my life almost ended before I could remember it. But somehow, I’m still here.

🧠✍️ Good Diary = Real thoughts + real feelings 👤 “I” voice – sounds like a real person talking 📍 One moment – focus on one important event 💭❤️ Feelings – share emotions, not just facts 👀🔊 Details – what they saw, heard, thought 🔒 Honest – personal and real thoughts 👉 Easy formula: 📖 = What happened + ❤️ Feelings + 💭 Thoughts
