Miami's sea levels are projected to rise 10-17 inches about 2000 levels, and recent studies show they are rising faster than expected.
Humanitarian Risks
Climate stressors worsen health outcomes, displacement, and inequality. This is especially prevalent in low-income communities such as Little Haiti and Liberty City. These communities face the urban heat island effect. This effect is caused by limited tree cover and aging infrastructure, making them more vulnerable to heat and flooding.
Frequency of King Tide
Rising sea levels have already increased the frequency of high-tide flooding, which now inundattes streets, neighborhoods, and critical infrstructure such as hospitals and major roads. The flat topography of Miami make it highly susceptile to storm surge and coastal erosion, with flood events becoming mroe common and even more damaging.
Transportation
Increased car-dependent growth is worsening both emissions and heat exposure. As population density increases without matching public transit expansion, it directly increases greenhouse gas emissions.
Environmental
Saltwater intrusion threatens freshwater supplies, and stronger storms damage ecosystems such as wetlands and mangroves.
Extreme Heat
In 2023, Miami experienced 37 consecutive days above a 100F heat index, with 13 days reaching 106F. This is a record breaking trend linked to global warming
