Reading Comprehension
Read the text below aloud.
The digestive system comprises of organs that work together as a system to break down complex foods—carbohydrates, fats, and proteins—into simpler molecules. The digestive system helps us get energy and fuel from the food we eat to grow, develop, and live our daily lives. Digestion begins in the mouth. In the mouth, both mechanical and chemical digestion of carbohydrates occur. Mechanical digestion involves chewing, which breaks down large molecules into smaller molecules. Chemical digestion in the mouth involves breaking apart chemical bonds in food with the help of salivary enzymes, which are biological catalysts that speed up the rate of chemical reactions. Next, food travels through the esophagus, a muscular tube, from the mouth to the stomach. In the stomach, protein and fat digestion begin. The stomach is very muscular and acidic. This harsh environment helps digest the food. The lining of the stomach has mucus to prevent the stomach from digesting itself.

After, the food travels to the small intestine, which is thin and long. In fact, the small intestine is about 20 feet long! In the small intestine, digestion is completed and absorption of nutrients begins. Then the food moves on to the large intestine, which is thin and short. The large intestine is about 5 feet long. In the large intestine, water absorption occurs. Finally, waste is stored in the rectum and eliminated through the anus.
