The marshall islands are a small chain of atolls in thhe pacific, which puts them in a particularly disadvantaged situation. The islands are potentially going to be uninhabitable within the century due to rising sea levels. Alongside this looming threat, citizens living there today deal with flooding during storms and high tides. As global temperatures rise, the threat of these storms and their severity has grown. The wildlife found on the islands must deal with increasingly shrinking habitat space due to this flooding and sea level rise.

What can be done?

In an effort to avoid flood damage brought on by high tides and storms, seawalls have been constructed in vulnerable areas. Alongside this, officials on the island have called for international efforts to reduce CO2 emmissions but with little success.

As a last resort, there have been considerations of migration, meaning that citizens would relocate to another country.

Who else is at risk?

The marshall islands are not the only small island nation in the pacific, the issue of rising sea levels is shared among them all. If efforts are not made to curb sea level rise, then the culture and people of these islands will be displaced .

Species unique to these islands alone face extinction if there is no intervention, entire habitats would disappear.
