Climate change refers to long-term changes in temperatures and weather patterns around the world. These changes can happen naturally, for example because of variations in the solar cycle, but over the last two centuries they have mainly been caused by human activities that are altering the Earth’s atmosphere.

The main cause of climate change is the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. When these fuels are burned, they release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane, which trap heat in the atmosphere. Human activities such as energy production, industrial processes, transportation, heating of buildings, and agriculture all contribute significantly to these emissions.

Climate change has many serious consequences for the environment. It leads to more frequent and intense natural disasters, including wildfires, hurricanes, typhoons, and long periods of drought. In addition, global temperatures are rising, causing sea levels to increase, polar ice caps to melt, and many animal and plant species to disappear, resulting in a loss of biodiversity and damage to ecosystems like coral reefs.

The effects of climate change also have a strong impact on human life. Many communities are forced to leave their homes because of extreme weather events, rising sea levels, or lack of water. Every year, about 23 million people are displaced due to climate-related disasters. In the future, the situation could become even worse, with sea levels expected to rise significantly and hundreds of millions of people at risk of being affected by drought.

To face this global problem, the United Nations organizes international conferences known as COPs, where world leaders meet to discuss solutions. In 2021, COP26 took place in Glasgow and highlighted the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions, although it did not lead to strong concrete actions. In 2022, COP27 was held in Sharm El-Sheikh and was influenced by global issues such as the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine, making climate agreements more difficult, even if richer countries promised to support developing nations.

Awareness Through Art
In addition to political action, raising awareness is also very important. One example is the French artist Saype, who creates large-scale artworks on fields using a technique called “field painting.” His works aim to spread messages about sustainability and environmental protection in a creative and impactful way.

One of Saype’s most famous projects is called Beyond Walls. This artwork represents a giant symbolic handshake, which expresses the idea of unity and cooperation among people. The message is that if humanity works together, it can overcome many of the challenges facing the world today. His artworks are made with natural and biodegradable materials, so they gradually disappear without harming the environment.
