We better capture visual content. Visual content is associated with cognitive and psychological mechanisms. Things enter through the eyes, the first image is what counts. We associate visual content with emotions.

‘Your content is liked, but it engages much more if it is interactive’

Step 1. Read the play

The very first step of a process for Gregory is to read the play. He then prints out a photo of the playwright of the show to ground him through his work. By having a photo of a playwright, this humanizes the show for him throughout his process.

Caryl Churchill: Love & Information Playwright

Step 2. initial meeting

Next, Gregory meets with the director. Gregory shares his initial ideas for designs and gets the director's vision as well. Conversation and communication with the director is crucial throughout the entire process. Since the director is entrusting the costume designer to build their world, it's very important to Gregory that he has a connection with the director.

Step 3. Research & Paperwork

Next, Gregory begins his research, looking into the playwright and characters within a show. Gregory creates a costume plot—a huge grid tracking all the characters and their respective scenes. After this, he researches the costumes. He often turns to Pinterest, the Library of Congress, or Shutterstock to find inspiration.

Step 4. Preliminary Sketches

Preliminary sketches can take many forms. Traditional outlines of an outfit, a collage of inspiration pictures, or even ink blots if Gregory feels that best represents his vision for costumes at this stage. With Love & Information Gregory began with looking at abstract paintings, then created paintings of his own. This allowed him to pinpoint the colors and patterns he was wanting.

Step 5. Final looks

Gregory then presents his final looks to the directors, which are approved or edited. After these notes, a couple of weeks are taken to paint and draw out the final figures.

Step 6. To the Shop!

Designs are then sent to the costume shop, at which point Gregory asks how he can best support shop workers as they bring his designs to fruition.

Step 7. Fittings

Once the costumes are made, the actors have fittings. Gregory has an emphasis on ensuring he connects with his actors and they feel fully comfortable in their costumes. If they don't, he makes adjustments as needed per the actor's requests.

Step 8. Opening & Celebrating!

Then—it's opening night! Gregory takes opening to let go of his designs, knowing his work is fully done, and celebrate the work he has put into a production!
