Step 2: Articulate your vision.
Step 3: Pressure-test.
Step 4: Commit.
Step 1: Answer these questions.
STEP 4: COMMIT
Commit yourself to your vision by connecting it to your Long Jump. Ask yourself:
- What does this vision require of me in the next 30, 90, and 365 days?
- What relationships, skills, and experiences do I need to build to get there?
- How will I know I'm on track?
Add these answers to your Long Jump template and revisit them at your next 1:1 with your manager.
STEP 3: PRESSURE TEST
Share your vision with two or three people who can give you an honest reaction:
- Your manager to confirm it aligns with what the role and team need
- Your peer mentor to gut-check whether it resonates with the organizational reality
- A trusted member of your Jump Network to make sure it reflects what you genuinely want
Listen to their feedback with genuine openness, then revise.
STEP 1: ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS
Reflect on what you want to contribute in this role and why it matters to you:
- What aspects of your vision are non-negotiable?
- What aspects are flexible?
- When can you give your team the chance to provide their input on the vision?
- How will you respond to resistance?
Write it down. Don't edit yet, just capture it.
STEP 2: ARTICULATE YOUR VISION
Articulate your vision clearly. A strong personal vision:
- Is specific enough to guide your decisions
- Connects your work to something larger than your task list
- Energizes you when you say it out loud
- Is honest about what you're building toward, not just what sounds good
Draft a 2-3 sentence version. It doesn't have to be perfect. It has to be true.
