BRIDGING THE GAP: A DIALOGUE ACROSS TIME
"The journey of a women's rights is not a straight line, but a relay race. Today we are going to discuss with Anita (18 years old) and Elvira(78 years old), how the definition of 'freedom' has evolved. From the fight for baisc legal divorce and reproductive rights to the modern struggle against the gender pay gap and digital burnout, we explore what it means to be a women in Italy now and then"
I struggle with "identity fragmentation." Online, I have to curate a version of myself that fits a narrative. I have the freedom to be anything, but that "infinite choice" is paralyzing. My self-worth often feels like it’s up for a public vote every time I post or speak.
Anita, is your identity defined more by your internal desires or by external expectations?
My identity was a pre-written script. I didn't ask "who am I?" until I was fifty. External expectations—daughter, wife, mother—were the walls of my room. It was restrictive, yes, but there was a quiet clarity in knowing exactly what was expected of me. Sofia has a horizon, but I had a path.
Elvira, is your identity defined more by your internal desires or by external expectations?
For my generation, sacrifice is often seen as a failure of boundaries. We are taught to prioritize "self-care" and mental health. If I sacrifice my dreams for a man or a family, my peers would see it as a regression. We sacrifice peace of mind for the sake of constant productivity.
Anita, what does the word "sacrifice" mean in the context of your life as a woman?
Sacrifice was the ultimate feminine virtue. To be a "good woman" was to disappear so that others could shine—your husband's career, your children's future. It wasn't seen as losing yourself; it was seen as fulfilling your purpose. Only now do I realize how much of my own soul I left in the shadows.
Elvira, what does the word "sacrifice" mean in the context of your life as a woman?
I feel powerful when I use my voice globally through technology. But I feel silenced by "cancel culture" and the fear of saying the wrong thing. It’s a paradox: I have a microphone, but I’m terrified of the feedback. Sometimes, the noise of everyone talking at once feels like a different kind of silence.
Anita, when do you feel most powerful, and when do you feel forced into silence?
I felt powerful in the kitchen and the classroom—the small domains I was allowed to rule. I was silenced by law and custom. In meetings, my ideas were often repeated by men and only then acknowledged. We learned to speak in whispers and hints to get what we wanted without bruising a man's ego.
Elvira, when do you feel most powerful, and when do you feel forced into silence?
The laws exist, but the environment doesn't always feel safe. I still share my live location with friends whenever I take an Uber or walk home. We have the rights on paper, but the culture hasn't fully caught up yet.
Anita, do you feel that the law sufficiently protects your rights and safety?
Things are much better now. I lived through the times when divorce and abortion were illegal. We fought hard for those rights. However, I worry that today young people take these hard-won freedoms for granted.
Elvira, do you feel that the law sufficiently protects your rights and safety?
It feels like a heavy responsibility. Having no pre-set path means every failure is entirely my fault. If I don’t "become someone," I can’t blame society or my family; I can only blame myself. This absolute freedom often feels like a form of anxiety.
Anita, is freedom a gift that makes life easier, or a responsibility that makes it heavier?
For me, freedom was a hard-won gift. I don’t think you realize how light life feels when you can finally decide for yourself, even if you make mistakes. To me, the "weight" Sofia feels is a luxury; I would have traded my "certainty" for her "anxiety" in a heartbeat.
Elvira, is freedom a gift that makes life easier, or a responsibility that makes it heavier?
THANK YOU!
Grazie mille!
