“WORLD WAR I: HOW A SINGLE EVENT SHOOK THE WORLD”

OBJECTIVE AND GUIDING QUESTION

Objective:

  • Students will be able to analyze the causes of World War I and explain how tensions in Europe led to a chain reaction of conflict.
Guiding Question:
  • Why was Europe ready for war in 1914?

WHAT WAS GOING ON IN EUROPE?

  • You will have 5 minutes to turn to your partner and discuss the following questions:
  • “Which of these do you think would make war more likely?”
  • “Which one seems the most dangerous?”

ALLIANCE SIMULATION

  • Students will be placed in groups of 3 for the following simulation.
  • Each group will have the following roles:
    • Scribe – writes down the group’s answers to the guiding questions
    • Presenter – presents the group’s answers to the class
    • Researcher – helps find and refine the group’s answers
  • If your group has a fourth member, assign them to one of these roles.
  • Using the provided information about your country, answer the following questions:
    • Why did your country join the war?
    • Did your country have a choice?
    • What role did alliances play?
  • When your country is called, your group should be prepared to answer each of these questions.
