CHE COSA RIMANE DELL'impero romano?
Dopo il 476 d.C rimase in vita l'Impero Romano d'Oriente, ovvero l'Impero Bizantino, con capitale Costantinopoli. Questa città divenne la sede dei principali imperatori d'Oriente; l'Impero Bizantino combinava tradizioni giuridiche e amministrative romane, culture ellenistiche e cristianesimo in un sistema centralizzato. L'imperatore, chiamato basileus, era considerato una figura sacra e unica autorità politica e religiosa. L'impero aveva un complesso apparato burocratico, militare e diplomatico.
LE RAGIONI DI SOPRAVVIVENZA
Le ragioni della sopravvivenza dell'Impero Romano d'Oriente, poi chiamato Impero Bizantino, sono diverse:
Posizione strategica della capitale Costantinopoli, protetta dal mare e dalle possenti mura teodosiane, che la rendevano quasi inespugnabile.
In Oriente l'imperatore mantenne la sua autorità effettiva, a differenza dell'Occidente dove i capi barbari dell'esercito avevano preso il potere a scapito dell'imperatore.
L'Impero d'Oriente era più ricco e meglio organizzato rispetto all'Occidente.
L'Impero mantenne un carattere multietnico e molte istituzioni del Tardo Impero Romano, evolvendosi gradualmente con influenze culturali greche.
Nonostante le perdite territoriali dovute a invasioni e all'espansione islamica, l'Impero riuscì a mantenere il controllo su territori chiave come la Tracia e l'Anatolia.

IMPERO BIZANTINO
L'Impero Bizantino è la denominazione assunta dall'Impero romano d'Oriente dopo la caduta dell'Impero d'Occidente nel 476 d.C. Il termine deriva dalla capitale, Bisanzio. Dopo la riconquista dei territori mediterranei da parte dei Vandali e dei Goti nel VI secolo, Bisanzio subì la pressione araba nei secoli VII-IX, perdendo Siria, Egitto e coste nordafricane. I Longobardi e gli Slavi si affermarono in Italia e nei Balcani. Nel X e XI secolo, l'Impero Bizantino consolidò il suo dominio sui Balcani e mantenne il controllo del Mediterraneo orientale, ma la pressione dei Normanni e dei Turchi portò alla sua decadenza a metà dell'XI secolo, culminando nella scomparsa dell'Impero nel XIII secolo e nella caduta di Costantinopoli nel 1453.

In campo militare, le campagne del generale Belisario portarono alla riconquista dell'Africa nel 532 d.C (vittoria contro i Vandali) e alla conquista di gran parte della Spagna (vittoria sui Visigoti). Tra il 535-553 d.C si sviluppa in Italia la Guerra Greco-Gotica, un conflitto molto duro e duraturo; nonostante la resistenza degli Ostrogoti guidati da Totila, il nuovo generale bizantino Narsete riuscì a scoffigerlo e a riportare l'Italia nelle mani dell'Impero. Successivamente Giustiano emanò la Prammatica Sanzione (554) per ristabilire l'ordine: -Italia ---> provincia con sede a Ravenna Tuttavia l'Italia uscì dal conflitto devastata da peste e carestie; così a popolazione abbandonò i centri urbani e perciò l'Italia tornò una regione marginale, povera e vulnerabile.
