My semester abroad in Halifax
A journey of growth, learning, and discovery in Nova Scotia

From September 2025 to January 2026, I had the incredible opportunity to live and study in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This experience was not just about academics, but about immersing myself in a new culture, gaining independence, and experiencing the welcoming atmosphere of the Canadian Maritimes during the fall and winter seasons.

Academic life at J.L. Ilsley High School
I attended J.L. Ilsley High School, where I was enrolled in Grade 12. In the Canadian system, this is the final year of high school, which corresponds to the fourth year of our Italian "liceo." Being part of the graduating class allowed me to experience the unique "Senior" atmosphere, participate in school spirit events, and adapt to a dynamic and interactive educational environment.

My academic curriculum was diverse and stimulating. In English, I refined my communication skills and analyzed literature, while Global History gave me a new perspective on world events. Philosophy encouraged me to think critically about ethics and logic, and Mathematics kept me focused on advanced problem-solving. This combination of subjects helped me develop a more well-rounded and international academic background.
Challenging my mind with diverse courses

Community service and volunteering
One of the most rewarding aspects of my stay was volunteering at St. Mary’s Church. Giving back to the Halifax community allowed me to connect with locals outside of the school environment. Whether I was helping with church events or community outreach, this experience taught me the importance of service and provided a deeper insight into the daily life and values of Nova Scotians.

During these five months, I didn't just meet Canadians; I built a network of international friends from all over the world. Sharing this journey with people from different cultures made the experience much richer. Together, we navigated the challenges of living abroad, shared our traditions, and created bonds that I know will last a lifetime, regardless of the distance between us.

Exploring Halifax and beyond
Halifax became my second home. I spent my free time exploring every corner of the city, from the historic waterfront and the Citadel to the local parks and cafes. Despite the cold Canadian winter starting in January, the warmth of the people and the beauty of the Atlantic coast made every excursion memorable. I embraced the local lifestyle, tried new foods, and fully enjoyed the "East Coast" vibe.

Conclusion and personal growth
Looking back on my time from September to January, I realize how much I have grown. Living in Halifax for a semester taught me how to be more adaptable, open-minded, and independent. I returned home with improved English, a stronger academic foundation, and a heart full of memories from the best four months of my life in Nova Scotia.
