A man and a woman drinking coffee at a table.
This picture is an example of what the lost generation was like. They don’t have a lot of attitude and are bland. They are with each other, but they don’t seem like they are there.
The lost generation concerns various groups, ideals, and standpoints during that time. An example of this is the idea of disillusionment, which is when you lose faith in something you once believed. The war caused widespread disillusionment. That feeling created the mindset of a lost generation. .

WWI affected the people during that time and led them to become the lost generation because they felt like outsiders. What I have explained is the effects that fall under alienation and it’s a part of the lost generation and its cause when people lose faith in their old traditions. Due to alienation leading into decadence, people started spending money, and being lavish. This led into expatriation. This is where people leave the state they were born in. This is closely related to alienation because they lose faith in their old traditions and leave the country. They also took all that money with them causing the economy to drop and more people started to spend money.
Woman dancing in front of a crowd
When analyzing the image, the mood seems to be an attempt at hopeful connection between peers. However, only one truly seems to be enjoying herself. This hopeful attempt at decadence is commonly seen in lost generation photography, where people attempt to find meaning and purpose, with little to no success.
Surrealism: Surrealism, it was an art and writing movement. It tried to show what is in the unconscious mind, things like dreams and just random thoughts people have. It got pretty popular right after World War I, which makes sense because people at that time started questioning what reality even was and what normal ways of thinking really meant. Surrealist artists, as well as the writers, they made pretty strange, sometimes unrealistic images and ideas to express deeper feelings that people were having then.
Illogical juxtaposition: This is where two objects are placed near each other that aren’t related at all. This got people thinking about how they could be related and what they could mean as a symbol. This is a good piece for the genre because it's a weird picture that's made from what's in the unconscious mind. Like in this piece, The fork is in a glass of water and it’s melting. This could make peoples minds race and possibly make it seem like the water is actually acidic. This could lead to a conclusion of not trusting things that look harmless.
This picture shows a smooth and melted area with clocks that are melting… this represents time slipping away. Uncanny distortion: Uncanny distortion, that is when something looks almost normal but it has been changed in a strange or unsettling way. The idea comes from Sigmund Freud and his ideas about the concept of “uncanny,” where familiar things start to feel weird or even uncomfortable. In surrealism, artists really used this idea a lot. They would stretch, melt, or twist objects, often to make them feel almost dreamlike, or otherworldly. Just as the clocks are in the picture above. Uncanny distortion is closely related to surrealism because they take regular objects and twist them into something otherworldly and weird. It’s unnatural and unsettling.
