Overview : What is Data
Data is facts, numbers, measurements, or observations that can be collected and stored.Example: Mangrove Coffee is small business that tracks its daily sales. The data collected includes:
- Date
- Sales Total (in dollar amount)
- Total Number of Sales
Overview : How is Data Used
Businesses use data to help them understand what people like, what is happening, and what they should do next.Example: At Mangrove Coffee, sales were very low on April 20th. If that day was a Monday, what would you recommend?
- Offer 1/2 price drinks on Mondays?
- Close the shop on Mondays?
- Gather more data before deciding?
Topic 1: Getting From Data to Information
Data is just a bunch of numbers and words until it is organized and labeled. Example: At Mangrove Coffee, the employees often lose the clipboard where the sales totals are supposed to be recorded. Instead, they text that information to the owner or scribble it on the back of an envelope. At the end of the week, the owner has a jumble of information:
- Text message dated April 19th: 848, 106
- Text message dated April 20th $192.00, #24, SLOOOOOW DAY
- Old Envelope: 4/21 - 672$$ - 84

Topic 1: Using the Organized and Labeled Data
Once data is collected and organized, it can be used to find information. Example: When Mangrove Coffee data collected and organized in a grid, the owner can find out about the business.
- April 19th was the busiest day
- April 20th was the slowest day
What's Next
What if the owner needs to know what the average purchase was or the % that sales were down on the 20th? Spreadsheets are tools that allow you to collect and organize data AND ask questions like that. Continue on to Topic 2: Working with Worksheets to learn how!
Topic 2: Working With Worksheets
In this topic, you are going to learn how to use worksheet to organize data. Step 1: Enter it accurately. Step 2: Review, check data types, figure out what blanks mean Step 3: Try out the tools
