Behind the Magic Curtain
Nightfall had arrived and the golden lights of the grand theatre began to twinkle. It was time. The auditorium thrummed with excited whispers, but no-one was quite as excited as Kaspar. With wide, bright eyes, the young boy gazed at the enormous stage between two velvet curtains. Trembling with giddiness, he waited impatiently as the room fizzed in anticipation. Finally, the last few people were taking their seats. “It’s about to start,” someone said softly. Then, silence.

Suddenly, a spotlight shone a dazzling beam over the centre of the stage. A mysterious melody began to play like a delicate dance of magic. Kaspar held his breath. Then, with a swish and a puff of smoke, the magician appeared in front of the velvet curtain. He grinned a marvellous grin and Kaspar’s stomach flipped in excitement. In a deep, booming voice, he called, “I am Abdul Kazam and welcome to my magic show!” Fireworks sparked from his fingertips, shadows transformed into shapes and puffs of colourful smoke billowed into the air. Everyone gasped. The spectators were transfixed.

The magician’s eyes gazed over his enthralled audience. “I now need a volunteer to disappear behind the magic curtain,” he announced. Without thinking, Kaspar stood up and darted to the stage. The illusionist pointed. “You… here comes a brave young man,” he called out as the audience clapped. The boy asked curiously, “What’s behind the curtain?” But the magician only smiled. He tapped the side of his nose and then beckoned the boy forwards. Taking a nervous step forward, Kaspar pulled the velvety material back and disappeared into the darkness. As far as Kaspar could see, thousands of magical items were rearranging themselves on shelves. Spell books, handkerchiefs, wands and sparkling things whooshed through the air. It was like a never-ending library of enchantment. High above him, the shelves reached up into a starry night sky. Tiny gemstones rained down from purple clouds, clattering into top hats the size of bathtubs. All the little boy could do was stare in amazement. Ducking down, he narrowly avoided a swirl of books that crashed into a nearby shelf. He laughed and held his hands out as glitter showered over him. It was pure magic.

The curtains were pulled open and there was nothing but darkness. However, when Kaspar put his hand into his pocket, he found a handful of tiny, purple gemstones. “Magic… it really does exist,” he whispered to himself.
Soon, a distant voice called, “Kaspar! Kaspar! Return to us!” Forcing himself to turn away, he began to withdraw from the world of magic behind the curtain. With a bang, boom and a puff of smoke, he found himself returned to the stage in front of those very curtains. The audience roared with applause and the conjurer took a deep bow. The curtains were pulled open and there was nothing but darkness.
