In Lesson 1, you learned to read history texts like a detective — using special words, context clues, and connecting events. Now it's time to level up! 🔍
THE BIG QUESTION:
Why do different people tell different stories about the same historical event?
Think about this:
Three friends watched the SAME soccer game. But they remember it very differently…

History works EXACTLY the same way! Different people saw the same events differently. Your job is to figure out why.

📝 Summarize Details from Historical Events
Summarizing = telling the MAIN IDEAS in your own words. Keep the most important facts. Leave out small details.
Why this matters:
Why this matters: When you read a long story, you need to know what's MOST important. Summarizing helps you focus on the big picture.
📰 Example: Columbus
❌ Long account:
✅ Summary:
"On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus and his crew saw land after sailing for 10 weeks. The sailors were sick. They were scared. They ran out of fresh water. Columbus thought he found Asia, but he actually found islands in the Caribbean. The local people came out to say hello."
"Columbus sailed from Spain and reached islands in the Caribbean, thinking he had found Asia."
See? The summary is MUCH shorter but tells the main idea!

👁️ Author's Perspective and Point of View
Perspective = The way YOU see something based on YOUR life and YOUR feelings.
Why this matters: When you understand WHY someone tells a story a certain way, you become smarter!
Real history example: - A colonist's perspective: "We are bringing new things to this land. We are heroes!"
- A Native American's perspective: "Strangers are taking our land. This is bad for us."
Both people are telling the TRUTH from their own perspective!

🔄 Compare and Contrast Multiple Accounts
Contrast = find what's DIFFERENT
Compare = find what's the SAME
Example:
Why this matters: When you compare and contrast, you see the WHOLE picture!

🧩 Synthesize Information from Multiple Sources
Synthesize = Read MULTIPLE stories and put them together to understand what REALLY happened.
Example:
What "Multiple Sources" Means:
A source = Any information about something that happened
Stories, journals, interviews, photos, videos, news articles, etc.
Multiple sources = Reading MORE THAN ONE source about the same thing
Why this matters:
One story only shows ONE perspective. But when you read MULTIPLE stories, you understand the WHOLE truth!

✍️ Use Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases
Prepositions = words that show WHERE, WHEN, or HOW things are related. They help you write more clearly and exactly.
The Formula:

Why this matters: When you use prepositions, your writing becomes CLEARER and MORE INTERESTING!

These 5 skills work TOGETHER — like steps in a detective's case. Here's how:
You read about Jamestown and summarize: "The colonists struggled to survive."
STEP 1 — Summarize:
STEP 2 — Understand Perspective:
"Who wrote this? A colonist. They experienced hunger and hardship, so they focused on survival."
You read a Native American account and compare: "The colonist focused on survival. The Native American focused on losing land. Different perspectives — same event."
STEP 3 — Compare & Contrast:
"The colonists were struggling to survive AND the Native Americans were losing their land. Both things are true. History is complicated."
STEP 4 — Synthesize:
"The colonists at Jamestown, during the early 1600s, struggled to survive while Native Americans in the region lost their land to the settlers."
STEP 5 — Precise Writing:
NOW YOU UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE STORY! When you use all 5 skills, history goes from confusing to clear.
PART 3 — ASSIGNMENT
Source Analysis Report — 15 Points 📋
📋 What You Will Do:
⭐ Rubric (15 pts):
Read TWO different accounts of the same historical event (your teacher provides them).
Summaries — both accounts, in own words
2 pts
SUMMARIZE both accounts in 1–2 sentences each.
Author's perspective — BOTH sources identified
3 pts
IDENTIFY each author's PERSPECTIVE — Who wrote it? What did they experience? What words give it away?
Compare & Contrast chart — same/different clearly
3 pts
COMPARE AND CONTRAST — what do both sources agree on? What's different? Fill in the chart.
Synthesis paragraph — uses facts from BOTH sources

SYNTHESIZE — write 3–5 sentences that use ideas from BOTH sources to explain the full picture.
