Lesson 160 The Nervous System
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to
- identify the two main parts of the nervous system.
- explain how the parts of the central nervous system work together.
- describe the four lobes of the cerebrum.
- differentiate among the functions of the three parts of the brain.
For real... Take notes.

Left Hemisphere vs. Right Hemisphere
- controls the left side of the body
- helps with spatial awareness
- helps interpret images, patterns, and music
Left Hemisphere
- controls the right side of the body
- important for language in most people
- helps with reading, writing, and math
Right Hemisphere
Frontal Lobe The frontal lobe helps with thinking, decision-making, personality, and voluntary movement
Parietal Lobe The parietal lobe processes touch, pain, temperature, and helps you understand where your body is in space.
Temporal Lobe The temporal lobe helps with hearing, speech, memory, and understanding language.
Occipital Lobe The occipital lobe receives messages from the eyes and helps the brain process vision.

Extension Activity: Apply Your Learning On a piece of paper. Choose 2 of the situations below. For each one, explain which part of the nervous system or brain is most involved and why. You touch a hot pan and pull your hand away fast. You ride a bike without falling over. You read a book out loud. You hear your name across the room and turn your head. You solve a hard math problem. You trip, but catch yourself before you fall. Sentence Starter The part most involved is the __________ because __________.
Left Hemisphere
The left hemisphere controls the right side of the body. In most people, it also plays a major role in language, reading, writing, and math.
Why It Matters
What It Helps You Do
Controls the right side of the body
Damage to the left hemisphere can affect language and may cause weakness on the right side of the body.
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
- Solving math problems
The two hemispheres work together, but each side has some specialized jobs. The left hemisphere is especially important for language in most people.
Right Hemisphere
The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body. It is especially important for spatial awareness, recognizing patterns, and processing visual information.
Why It Matters
What It Helps You Do
controls left side of the body
Damage to the right hemisphere can affect spatial awareness and may cause weakness on the left side of the body.
understand images, patterns, and where things are in space
Common Myth
Examples
reading a map, noticing shapes, recognizing faces, and understanding visual patterns
The right hemisphere is not the “creative side” that works alone. Both hemispheres work together for most tasks.
The right hemisphere helps people make sense of visual and spatial information. It plays an important role in recognizing patterns and understanding where objects are around you.
