The Onion

Lost at Sea

Forgotten Life

The Onion began as a comedic, satirical, newspaper out of Wisconsin. The New York City print edition launch party was planned for Sep. 16th, 2001, but was postponed.Following 9/11, wiriters and editors of the paper were unsure if joking about the tragedy was "too soon". Their next issue leaned into the heartwarming side of America with headlines like "Hugging Up 76,000 Percent," and "Not Knowing What Else To Do, Woman Bakes American-Flag Cake."

In the days leading up to 9/11, George Carlin, a standup comedian, made jokes about loving tragedy where "a lot of people die". Other comedians and late night hosts struggle with carrying on with regular content after the attacks.

Following 9/11, it became customary to sing God Bless America at every MLB game, and movement during the song was seen as disrespectful.Bradford Campeau-Laurion, went to the restroom during the song at a Yankees game in 2008 and was thrown out of the stadium by NYPD. He sued the Yankees and NYPD with the ACLU and got a $10,000 settlement (from the NYPD).

Alan Block, amoung serveral otheres were aboard a giant ship in the middle of sea on 9/11, filming the reality show The Ship. Every person on board was offered the chance to go home, but denied. They viewed the attacks for the first time, together after exiting the ship, almost a year after 9/11/01.

Hundereds of missing posters were put up in the streets of Manhattan following the attacks on 9/11. Very few people were found. One man recalls finding his brother at a shelter. He went by a different name, and didn't recognize his family. He continued to live under an alieas, acting as if he had never seen what happened to the Twin Towers that day.

In 2019, Christopher Tramantana was called upon to play Osama Bin Laden in the show Ramy. In the same year he played Jesus Christ in the show Future Man. The episode of Ramy scares a lot of people, as it is one of the first ever screen portrayals of Bin Laden played seriously and intently.

Mark Roberts was as an NYC tour guide. He loved the city and, unlike other locals, loved tourists. He spent a lot of time at ground zero, showing tourists the area, and debating conspiracy theorists who claim 9/11 was a hoax.He was the first person hired as a guide at One World Trade Center Observatory.

Mohammed Razvi was living the "American Dream" as a multi-buisness owner in "Little Pakistan" before 9/11. Following the attacks, the Muslim community was heavily ostrasied by the country, including Razvi. His buisnesses were boycotted, and he compares the experience to the holocaust.
