What is a Balanced Diet?

A Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is one that includes the right amounts of different types of foods to support your growth and health. It consists of foods which provide energy that help build and repair the body, and support overall health. A healthy, balanced diet includes foods from all five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy. This ensures that you receive the necessary nutrients for your development and well-being.

Ingredients to Avoid

Ingredients to Avoid

When we eat healthy foods, our bodies feel strong and happy. But some ingredients are not good for us if we have too much. Sugar makes treats sweet, but too much can hurt our teeth and make us tired and cause diabetes. Salt adds flavor, but eating too much can make our heart work too hard which could lead to high blood pressure and strokes . Fats give us energy, but too many fried or oily foods can upset our body resulting in things such as an upset stomach, weight gain or heart issues. That’s why we should limit sugar, salt, and fats and choose more fruits, veggies, grains, protein, and dairy to build a balanced meal.

Food Helps My Body

“We are what we eat.” Food is the fuel for your body. But what does that really mean? Our body needs energy to do everyday things—like walking, running, breathing, and even staying warm. That energy comes from the nutrients in the food we eat.

Healthy foods give you all the nutrients you need to stay healthy, feel well, and have plenty of energy.

Nutrients

Nutrients are chemical compounds found in food.

They make food useful to the body—they provide energy, build and repair tissues, and help our bodies grow and stay healthy.

Fresh foods, like apples, carrots, milk, and chicken, come straight from farms and are full of the vitamins and minerals our bodies need. They help us grow, give us energy, and keep us healthy. Processed foods, like chips, candy, and fast food burgers, are often made with extra sugar, salt, and fats. These foods can taste good, but eating them too often can make us feel tired or unhealthy. That’s why it’s best to eat fresh foods most of the time and save processed or fast foods for only once in a while.
