The Industrial Revolution in Britain

The Industrial Revolution was another of those extraordinary jumps forward in the story of civilization. Stephen Gardiner

Why did it start in Britain?

The Industrial Revolution started in Britain because it had large deposits of raw materials, such as coal and iron ore, strategic position, colonies and a politically stable system.

Causes:

Effects:

Factories replaced cottage industries and production increased rapidly. Industrial cities grew quickly as people moved from rural areas to find work, and Britain became a major industrial power with improved transport and communication system.

The Industrial Revolution was caused by technological innovations, the availability of capital from agriculture and trade, and the expansion of national and international markets.

Steam Engine

Power Loom

Steam Locomotive

Spinning Jenny

Pros

Cons

-Technological progress improved production methods;-Factories increased the quantity of goods produced;-Transport and communication system improved;-More job opportunities were created in cities;-National and international trade expanded;-Britain became a leading industrial power.

-Workers worked very long hours; -Wages were very low; -Factories were dangerous and unsafe; -Child labour was very common; -Cities became overcrowded very quickly; -Poor housing and sanitation caused diseases; -Social inequalities between rich and poor increased.

Spinning Jenny

The spinning jenny was an important machine in the First Industrial Revolution. It was invented by James Hargreaves. Before the spinning jenny, people used a spinning wheel to make thread, and they could only spin one thread at a time. The spinning jenny allowed one person to spin many threads at the same time. The spinning jenny made it much faster and easier to produce yarn, helping the textile industry grow quickly.

Steam Locomotive

The steam locomotive was a train powered by a steam engine. It could move people and goods quickly over long distances. Before trains, transport was slow and expensive, often done with horses or boats. With steam locomotives, travel and trade became much faster and easier. The steam locomotive helped connect cities and made transport more efficient.

Power Loom

The power loom was an important machine during the First Industrial Revolution. It was used to weave cloth automatically. Before the power loom, people wove fabric by hand, which was slow and hard work. The power loom used water or steam power to work much faster. The power loom helped produce cloth quickly and in large amounts, making textiles cheaper and easier to find.

Steam Engine

The steam engine was one of the most important inventions of the First Industrial Revolution. It used steam from heated water to create power. This power could move machines, pumps, and trains. Before the steam engine, most work was done by people, animals, or water. With the steam engine, factories could produce goods faster and more easily. It also helped in mining, because it could pump water out of deep mines. The steam engine changed the way people worked and made industry grow quickly.
