Background

WW began in 1963. Jean Nidetch, fed up with fad diets, created the program. She entered New York City's Board of Health's 10-week weight loss program two years earlier. She lost weight but lacked motivation from the program. So she started a weight reduction group in her living room, inviting friends to discuss their objectives weekly. These informal gatherings evolved into the curriculum we know today, incorporating science, nutrition, and technology. Weight Watchers changed to “WW” in 2018 to emphasize wellbeing beyond weight.

How Does it Work?

WW allocates points to various foods according to their nutritional value rather than tracking calories. WW members receive Points Budgets to "spend" on food. Treats are allowed as long as you keep within your points restriction. The goal is to promote a healthy diet while maintaining flexibility. Exercise earns activity points, which are added to weekly food points. Workshops, one-on-one coaching, and licensed dietitian support are available depending on the plan.
