Simile
The simile are figurative language is comparative in the sentences that uses key words: "like" or "as".
Examples of Simile
The structure tends to be like:[thing A} + is +LIKE + [thing B] {thing A} + is + AS + ADJECTIVE + AS [thing B]
Example:The dos is as soft as a cloud. (Here we are comparing the fluffiness of the dogs hide with a cloud) The water is clear like a mirror. (In these sentence we are comparing the cleanliness of the water with the cleanliness of a mirror)
Practice
In the following sentences, underline the simile, and tell me the 2 objects being compared: 1. THE BABY'S SKIN WAS AS SOFT AS CLOUD. 2. WHEN HE WAS ANGRY, HIS EYES WERE LIKE FIRE. 3. THE STUDENTS WERE AS BUSY AS BEES WORKING ON THEIR PROJECT. 4. THE OLD CAR RAN LIKE A DREAM AFTER IT WAS FIXED. 5. SHE STOOD AS STILL AS A STATUE DURING THE CEREMONY. 6. THE OLD CAR RAN LIKE A DREAM. 7. THE ATHLETE WAS AS FAST LIKE A LIGHTING.

Metaphors
-This type of comparative tool doesn't compare using words "like" or "as". In this cases they are an indirect form of comparison, since they dont need to offer the two items being compared (in some cases they offer both items being compared). We have to infer it using the context on the sentence. Ex. There is a white blanket on top of the mountain -The item that we are comparing white blanket, is snow. The sentence is trying to tell us that at the top of the montain there is snow.
Practice
In the following sentence underline the metaphore, and then tell what is the sentence telling us really.
- The classroom was a zoo.
- Her brain is a sponge.
- The stars were tiny diamonds.
- Life is a rollercoaster.
- He is a night owl.
- The white pearls on your mouth.
- That walking encyclopedia is my brother.
- There is a mountain of homework.
Hyperbole
Hyperbole is the art of extreme exaggeration. It’s a figure of speech used to emphasize either a quality, or quantity of a certain aspect in the sentence. The good thing about this figure of speech is that it is an obvious exaggeration.
Ex. "I've told you a million times!" (You probably only said it twice). "I’m so hungry I could eat a horse." (You're just ready for dinner). "This suitcase weighs a ton." (It’s heavy, but not 2,000 pounds).
Why do we use it?
Emphasis: It highlights the intensity of a feeling or situation. Humor: Exaggerating things to an impossible degree often makes them funny. Creativity: It makes ordinary descriptions sound extraordinary.
Practice: Identify and explain the hyperbole.
- I’ve listened to this new Taylor Swift song a billion times today.
- In Avengers: Endgame, the final battle lasted for an eternity.
- Mr. Beast is giving away enough money to buy the entire universe.
- The Wi-Fi at this school is so slow that I grew a beard waiting for the page to load.
- If I don't get tickets to the concert, my life is literally over.
Last figurative language Personfication
What is personfication?
giving human qualities, emotions, or actions to non-human things (animals, objects, or ideas). It is figurative language, meaning the object isn't literally human; we just describe it that way to make it more interesting. -Example: "The wind howled in the night." (Wind can’t literally howl like a wolf or person, but it sounds that way).
Personification
Why does writes use it?
Create Empathy: It helps the reader connect emotionally to an object. Vivid Imagery: It makes a scene "pop" in the reader's mind. Set the Mood: -Happy: "The sun smiled down on us". -Scary: "The old house groaned in the wind".
Personificaiton in music
Katy Perry, "Firework": "6 feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing". Michael Jackson, "Thriller": "You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes". Frozen, "Let It Go": "The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside".
Practice: Mark with an x, those sentences that are personification.___The car grumbled as it started up. ___The dog is brown and fluffy. ___The leaves danced across the lawn. ___The computer is fast.
