Detection of Results and Communication with the UITRI
IdISBa considers any knowledge, technology, procedure, or tool with potential practical application in healthcare or relevance to the socio-economic environment to be an innovation result. The research team must communicate any identified result to the UITRI as soon as possible, preferably before any publication or dissemination to the public, using the established channels (form, email, or phone contact). The UITRI will assist in describing the result, its level of maturity, and the problem it addresses, and will provide guidance from the outset on possible protection and transfer strategies.
Contractual Formalisation
When the result involves collaboration with other entities or generates intellectual or industrial property rights, the UITRI coordinates the necessary agreements. This may include, depending on the case, confidentiality agreements, collaboration agreements, R&D contracts, or technology licensing agreements, among others. The aim is to provide a secure and clear legal framework for all parties, allowing research staff to focus on their scientific activity while the UITRI manages the contractual aspects and the protection of interests.
Protection Strategy
The UITRI defines, together with the research team, the most appropriate protection strategy for each result, based on its nature, level of maturity, and exploitation potential. To this end, different modalities are considered: under industrial property, primarily patents and, in certain cases, utility models or industrial designs; and under intellectual property, the protection of software, databases, and other developments through copyright or other specific legal mechanisms. In some cases, it may also be preferable to opt for trade secret protection, keeping the knowledge undisclosed and safeguarded through confidentiality agreements and internal information management measures.
Idea Evaluation
Following the communication, the UITRI assesses the novelty, state of the art, potential usefulness within the healthcare system, and interest for potential partners together with the research team. The level of technological maturity and the requirements needed to advance (proofs of concept, validation, implementation) are analyzed, as well as internal resources and funding opportunities.Based on this information, a realistic action plan is agreed upon: protecting the result, seeking co-development partners, or reorienting the idea towards the most appropriate exploitation pathway.
Transfer
During the transfer phase, the UITRI works to ensure that protected or mature results reach the healthcare system and the market through licensing, co-development projects, agreements with companies, or, where appropriate, the creation of spin-offs. The unit supports the research team in identifying partners, negotiating terms and conditions, and accessing funding and entrepreneurship programs. The UITRI also monitors protected assets and maintains relationships with key stakeholders in the ecosystem in order to generate opportunities for real impact in clinical practice and society.
