Understanding Learners
Importance in Education
Understanding the different groups of learners in your educational setting is really about moving away from a one-size-fits-all mindset. When we identify specific needs and strengths, we can intentionally choose resources that actually hit the mark for everyone, rather than just the "average" student. This naturally leads into Universal Design for Learning, where we're building in flexibility from the start. By providing those different pathways for engagement and representation, we're creating a space where every student has the tools they need to grow both as a person and as a learner.
My Context
Universal Design for Learning
UDL and the Library
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework that moves us away from simply troubleshooting of individual student needs and toward a more proactive, intentional design of the library environment. By providing multiple means of engagement and representation, we can create a space that meets students where they are from the very beginning. This approach allows us to shift our focus toward removing barriers to access and ensuring that every student has the tools they need to reach their full potential. Ultimately, UDL isn't about fixing the learner; it's about designing flexible learning experiences that celebrate the diverse ways our students process and interact with the world.

Beanstack
Beanstack is a web and mobile application that uses gamification, such as digital badges and reading streaks, to track student reading and motivate them to meet personalized literacy goals. This app aligns with the UDL framework by providing multiple means of engagement and representation that transform reading into an inclusive, choice-driven activity. By gamifying the reading experience through digital badges, streaks, and customizable challenges, it taps into diverse motivational drivers, allowing students to set personal goals and monitor their own progress—a key component of the Engagement pillar.

Conferences and Networks for Library Media Specialists
Nebraska Educational Technology Association
Social Media
AASL National Conference
TikTok, Instagram, YouTube
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) National Conference is the ONLY national conference specifically for school librarians and our unique role as leaders, instructional partners, information specialists, teachers, and program administrators.
Social media offers a unique Personal Learning Network (PLN), allowing us to connect with the broader library community beyond our own school walls. It’s a space where we can swap gamification strategies, share creative library displays, and stay current on the latest tech tools. By curating a feed of fellow media specialists and literacy experts, we can continuously refine our professional voice and bring fresh, accessible ideas back to our students
NETA Conference is an annual educational technology conference in Nebraska where teachers, technology specialists, and other educational professionals gather to explore innovative digital tools, share best practices for integrating technology into the classroom, and collaborate on strategies to enhance student learning.
AASL '25
National Library Conference
American Association of School Librarians hosted a conference in St. Louis in Oct. 2025. I was so happy to have the opportunity to present, meet with authors, librarians, and publishing representatives. This was by far my favorite and most fufilling conference to attend!

Audiobook Tasting
This activity can be used with any class to familiarize students with how to use SORA and browse for audiobooks!
Battle of the Books Podcast Activity
This activity can be used with any group of students, but it was created for Battle of the Books students to create podcasts based on the books they read for the competition.
Diverse Representation in Materials
Multiple Means of Representation & Engagement
Prioritizing diverse representation within library materials is a foundational application of UDL that directly addresses multiple means of representation and engagement. By curating collections that include a wide range of formats—such as graphic novels, verse novels, and audiobooks—the library ensures that information is accessible to students with varying decoding skills and cognitive strengths.Beyond format, the inclusion of diverse protagonists and perspectives ensures that students see their own identities and lived experiences reflected in the books they pull off the shelves. This proactive design recognizes that when we build a collection "for the margins" through inclusive purchasing, it becomes more robust and effective for the entire student body. Ultimately, providing those mirrors and windows for our students removes the invisible barriers that can make a traditional, narrow collection feel like it just isn't for them.
We Need Diverse Books
- a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
- Advocates for essential changes in the publishing industry to produce and promote literature reflecting and honoring the lives of all young people
Physical & Digital Environment Options
Creating a library environment that offers multiple means of engagement involves designing various "zones" for different sensory needs. This can include quiet individual study areas, collaborative stations with interactive tools like board games, and digital access points via Sora for students who prefer a screen-based reading experience.
- Scaffolds support student resource use.
- Ex. Using QR codes on shelves to provide independent access to book trailers or recommended book lists
- Dynamic Physical Layouts
- Ex. Using dynamic shelving (i.e. books facing out) to make browsing easier and more accessible
Learners at Grandview
Special Education Services
With nearly 11% of Nebraska students receiving special education services, school libraries must shift from a "one-size-fits-all" model toward the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. A recent diversity analysis of Grandview's school library collection revealed that 96% of the current collection is print-only, creating unintended barriers for students with dyslexia, visual impairments, or physical challenges. By identifying these "systems of exclusion," educators can move past temporary troubleshooting toward a more inclusive, permanent design philosophy that ensures all learners have equal access to challenging materials. To dismantle these barriers, Elkhorn middle school media specialists secured a grant for Sora, a digital platform that provides customizable e-books and audiobooks. This tool directly addresses UDL guidelines by allowing students to adjust font sizes, utilize dyslexic-friendly typefaces, and engage with professional audio narration. By integrating these flexible technologies, the library transforms reading from a rigid requirement into an accessible experience tailored to the specific perceptual needs of every student.
- Click the link (+) above for a How-To Video on Sora!
- Sora allows students to check out e-books & audiobooks for free
- There are also Read-Along eBooks read and highlight text as students read!
Learners at Valley View
High Ability Learner Education
Elkhorn Valley View Middle School is a suburban middle school serving 679 students in grades 6–8. A critical pattern identified in the data is the high proportion of High Ability Learners (HALE), as 22% of the student population is identified as gifted. This is significantly higher than the state average of 13% and the district average of 15%. Anecdotally, it is even higher than Elkhorn Grandview Middle School (19%). To better serve this population and the broader student body, I hope to implement the "Shelf-Made" Project in the next school year to directly incorporate student voice into collection development. By empowering students to take an active role in selecting materials, the library can ensure the collection reflects their unique interests and academic needs while fostering a deeper sense of ownership over their reading lives.
"Shelf-Made" HALE Project
- Students create wish lists of books for the library.
- Wish lists are presented to stakeholders including PTO, staff, & students.
- All stakeholders vote on a list
- Students have agency in books purchased.
