Could humans live beyond earth?
New Worlds
Humans are already preparing to return to the Moon and are working toward future missions to Mars.
What if humans tried to live somewhere beyond Earth? In this course, you’ll explore real discoveries about space, consider what makes a place livable, and examine how civilizations rise and fall. Then, you’ll use what you learn to imagine and design a new world where humans could survive.
Off the Trail
No signal. No power. No phone.
You’re hiking in the wilderness when you realize you’ve wandered off the trail. The path is gone, your surroundings all look the same, and you’re no longer sure which direction leads back. You have a map—but you don’t know where you are on it.
What do you do—and how do you find your way back?
In this course, you’ll learn how people navigate the natural world—using the sun, stars, landforms, and careful observation. You’ll explore real survival strategies, study how people have found their way throughout history, and build the skills needed to make decisions in unfamiliar environments. By the end, you’ll use what you’ve learned to solve this challenge and create your own survival guide, designed to help someone find their way when they’re lost in the wilderness.
Plan the Change
What would you change if you had the chance to improve our community?
In this course, you’ll explore how communities are shaped—by the environment, by human needs, and by the decisions people make. You’ll study how communities have formed throughout history, including those built by choice and those shaped by constraint. You’ll also investigate what it takes for a community to function, from access to water and resources to the systems that support daily life. Then, you’ll choose one change you believe would make a difference and develop a proposal—complete with a plan or model—to share with your local government.
And yes, we'll actually share it!
Web of Life
Get ready to explore the wild world of animals and the ecosystems they live in.
In this course, you’ll investigate how all living things are connected in a “web of life.” You’ll study real ecosystems and explore what keeps them in balance, including an in-depth look at what happened when wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone—and how one change affected an entire system. After developing a deeper understanding of how ecosystems function, you’ll choose a national park and create a brochure that visitors might receive when they enter. Your guide will explain how the ecosystem works, highlighting the plants, animals, and environmental features that make it unique. You’ll show how living things are connected, what keeps the system in balance, and what could happen if something changes—helping visitors understand not just what they’re seeing, but how everything is connected.
What if you had to invent science from scratch?
Start from Scratch
Have you ever wondered how humans first figured out how the world works? Before there were textbooks, experiments, or even agreed-upon facts, people had to make sense of everything from scratch. They told stories, watched the sky, searched for patterns, and slowly began to test their ideas.
In this course, you’ll step into their shoes. You’ll explore how early thinkers explained the universe, tracked time, and began to replace stories with observation, reasoning, and mathematics. Then, you’ll take on the challenge yourself. You’ll imagine that all knowledge has been lost and that you are responsible for rebuilding it. You’ll create a guide for a new generation, deciding what they need to understand the world and how to figure it out.
Where Did This Come From?
Where does your clothing come from—and what does it take to make it?
Take a look at what you’re wearing. Where did it come from? In this course, you’ll trace the journey of clothing from raw materials to finished products. You’ll explore how fibers are grown or made, how clothes are produced, and the different steps they go through before reaching you.
Along the way, you’ll investigate the environmental and human impact of clothing production and explore how people think about sustainability and decision-making. Then, you’ll investigate a piece of clothing to uncover what it takes to make it—from raw materials to finished product. You’ll explore the steps, processes, and decisions involved, and help others understand what might be happening behind the scenes.
