The Elephant’s Diary: A Visitor from the Past

Dear Diary, What a day it has been! Things have been getting busy here at the zoo, just like they used to be when I was a young elephant. Back then, each day was full of fun thanks to the most wonderful friend I could ever ask for… my keeper. She would bring me an apple in the mornings and I would help her to tidy my enclosure. We did everything together and there was never a moment of unhappiness in our little world. My keeper made the zoo feel like home, but life wasn’t always that easy for us.

One terrible day, everything went dark. I remember the thunderous booms and I’ll never forget the enormous bangs that crashed all around. Bright lights blazed and huge clouds of smoke billowed everywhere. It was terrifying. My legs trembled with uncertainty and I trumpeted out in fear. Chaos and disorder tore the world apart. I was all alone. As each day darkened into night, I dreaded the return of those awful noises. Thankfully, my keeper always came back.

When the zoo was closed at night, my keeper would creep back into my enclosure to be with me. She knew how frightened I was of the huge bangs so she would stay with me through the night. She knew how much the noise hurt my ears so she would sit and calm me and rub my skin. She knew how lonely I was so she would tell me stories and soothe away my discomfort. It was because of my keeper that I had hope to hold onto. She kept me safe. She was my family. She was everything.

Now, years have passed since the war and I hadn’t seen my keeper for so very long… until today! Just this morning, can you believe it… I have had the most unexpected surprise. My keeper has come to visit me, and my family right here at the zoo! The moment I saw her, all those years washed away. I have always remembered how kind she was to me during those terrifying nights. Her gentle care and her soothing comfort have never left me. Above all else, I have always remembered her friendship and friendship is something an elephant never forgets. Sheila
