Romeo and Juliet's "meet-cute"
An Expression of Love from Romeo and Juliet
Romeo meets Juliet for the first time at the Capulet party. This is their meet-cute and also the start of their loving and tragic relationship. When Romeo first sees Juliet, he describes her as incomparably beautiful. He immiedatley "falls in love" with her and her looks. “It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night like a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear, beauty too rich for us, for earth too dear” (1.5.42-45)
Romeo describes his deep love for Rosaline to Benvolio. He expresses his sorrows and woes that his feelings aren’t reciprocated, and Rosaline does not want to be married. He is in anguish that she will not fall in love with him, when he was so infatuated with her. “She refuses to be hit by Cupid’s arrow…She will not stay the siege of loving terms, Nor bide th’ encounter of assailing eyes, Nor ope her lap to saint-seducing gold” (1.1.202-208).
Tybalt, Mercutio, and Romeo get into a fight at the beginning of Act 3. At first, Romeo tries to stop Mercutio and Tybalt’s fighting, but when Mercutio gets stabbed and dies, Romeo decides to avenge Mercutio. He was trying to not be the villian, but after witnessing his best friend dying, he declares that either him, Tybalt, or both of them will die. “Away to heaven, resptive lenity, Adn fire-eyed fury be my conduct now. Now, Tybalt, take the 'villian' back agin" (3.1.119-121)
Romeo is hidden in the woods and he sees Juliet on the balcony. He witnesses Juliet confessing her love for him and they both declare that they would disown their names if it meant that they could love and be together. At the end of this scene they decide to get married and Romeo goes to find Friar Lawrence. “Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized. Henceforth I will never be Romeo” (2.2.50-51)
Capulet and Lady Capulet discuss with Paris the engagement they are planning for Juliet. They believe that this match would be perfect, and assumed Juliet would both appreciate and feel honored by it. However, Juliet says that she thanks her parents for this arrangement, but she does not want to get married. In response to this, Capulet declares that if Juliet is not married to Paris, she will be disowned. “A whining mammet, in her fortune’s tender, to answer ‘I’ll not wed,’...But, an you will not wed, I’ll pardon you. Graze where you will, you shall not house with me” (3.5.185-189)

After learning of her engagement to Paris, Juliet finds Friar Lawrence to ask him for advice. Juliet tells him that she would do anything in order to remain a good and pure wife to Romeo; even kill herself. Hearing this, Friar Lawrence suggests that Juliet fakes her death. After Juliet takes a liquor, she will look dead and will then not be married and carried to the Capulet family tomb. When she is there, Romeo will take her with him to Mantua. “Then is it likely thou wilt undertake a thing like death to chide away this shame, that copest with death himself to ‘scape from it” (4.1.74-74)
