Feudalism
Feudalism
Land was the most valuable thing in feudal times because: It provided food (through farming) It gave people a way to earn a living It showed power and wealth The more land someone had, the more important and powerful they were. Everything in feudalism was based on who owned land and who worked it.
What contributed to the end of Feudalism?
Several big problems weakened it:
-
🌾 Famine
Bad weather and poor harvests meant less food, and many people starved.
- DiseaseThe Black Death killed millions of people in Europe. With fewer workers, the system started to break down.
-
✊ Revolts
Peasants began to demand better treatment and more freedom. Some even rebelled against the nobles.
- People Moved. Why?
- 💰 New Jobs (Not Farming)
- In cities, people could become merchants (traders), craftsmen (like blacksmiths), or shopkeepers.
- More Freedom
- In many places, if a serf escaped to a city and lived there for a certain amount of time, they could become free. There was even a saying: “City air makes you free.”
- 🏰 Less Control for Lords
- As people left the countryside, nobles had fewer workers on their land, so their power started to shrink.
