Jumping To New Heights: A School Olympic Guide for the High Jump
Introduction: Why this Olympic Sport is Great for Our School Have you heard of the high jump? This is an amazing Olympic sport that can easily be adapted for an Olympics day at our school! High jump is a super, fun sport where you sprint down a runway. Then you have to soar over a long, narrow crossbar without touching it. You get to run, jump and see how high you can go! It really is all about having fun. Do you think you could be an Olympic high jumper one day? Read this guide to find out more!
Equipment: Things to Get Ready
You will need:
• A horizontal high jump bar
• Two vertical posts to hold the high jump bar in place
• A soft, cushioned mat to ensure a safe place to land
• A metre stick to measure the jumper’s height
• A stopwatch to time each run
You might also want a clipboard so you can keep the scores.
Training: How to be School Olympic Ready
Firstly, it is important that you stay active, eat healthy foods and get plenty of rest. Practise different activities, like running, jumping and climbing to help improve your body’s strength. Try to become the strongest and fittest you can be. Next, set yourself goals like running faster or jumping higher each day. Finally, keep jumping high and reach for the stars!
Basic Rules: Rules for the high jumper are: 1. Start by running to the curved, marked line and lift off with one foot.
2. Always jump into the air and over the horizontal bar. Do not knock it off!
3. There are only three attempts allowed or you will be eliminated. 4. The bar gets raised after each round and the winner is the person who jumps the highest.
Olympic Facts: Did You Know? Did you know the high jump was first introduced into the Olympics in 1896? It has been included for over one hundred years! The current world record for the high jump is 2.45 metres! Interestingly, the United States of America have won the most Olympic gold medals in categories for both men and women. Another fascinating fact is that some people jump backwards over the bar. This athlete’s technique is called the Fosbury Flop. It was introduced in 1968 but is still used today!
