The Dignity Index is really about tracking how we treat people, especially when we disagree. It centers on the idea that every person has inherent worth and deserves to be treated that way. At its core, it gives language to something we all feel but don’t always name: the difference between dignity and contempt.

We believe in dignity, but we’re not always practicing it
Most people agree that everyone deserves dignity, but the reality is we don’t think that’s what’s happening in our day-to-day interactions.

Do you think it is possible to ease and heal the divisions in our country, or do you think it is not realistic that the divisions in our country can be eased or healed?

At the same time, there’s still this underlying belief that things can improve, which matters.
There’s a strong sense of exhaustion around division, and people are feeling the weight of it in their relationships and conversations.

It's more than just being "nice"
Dignity builds trust, and trust is what makes problem-solving possible. Contempt does the opposite; it shuts people down and makes meaningful conversations almost impossible.
3.Why Does Dignity Matters?
Why this matters to me...
- I’ve realized dignity is about how I show up in everyday conversations, especially when I disagree with someone. As Northouse points out, “leadership is a process whereby the leader influences others” (Northouse, 2010), meaning that how I show up actually impacts people.
- When I lead with dignity, conversations stay open and productive, but when I don’t, things shut down quickly.
- It reminds me that it’s not disagreement that causes division, it’s how I communicate in those moments.
- Dignity takes intention; it’s choosing to pause, listen, and respond thoughtfully instead of reacting.

- Almost everyone agrees people deserve dignity, but we don’t think that’s how people actually behave.
- It shouldn't have surprised me because it's how I think, too. I guess it was an interesting unifying feeling to see that I was in the majority.
- People still believe things can get better, even with how divided things feel right now.
- This may be a sign for me to limit my social media exposure, as I feel like a lot of the media I come across is very pessimistic about the future of humanity.
- Individual behavior matters.
- The Dignity Index really showed me how much of an impact I can have by just starting with myself and allowing my example to cause a rippling effect.
