Unit 5: How do light, heat and sound energy behave differently?

STaRT

Hi crazy little scientists! At the end of this unit, you will discover a special secret message waiting for you. Pay close attention, do your best, and enjoy the journey because every activity will help you get closer to the surprise.Good luck and have fun learning!

What' s sound?

Vibrations of waves through a medium (solid, liquid or gas). It can' t travel through a vacuum.

  • Loud sounds are produced by: large vibrations
  • Small sounds are produced by; small vibrations

Challenge 2: order the sounds from the loudest to the quietest

Challenge 1: why do sound move faster through water than through air?

Challenge 3: which living things use echoes to navigate or hunt?

The first key number is...

What´ s light?

Form of energy on the elctromagnetic spectrum that is both a particle and a wave and travels in a straight line

MISIÓN 4
light properties

REFLECTION

When rays aren´ t absorbed by an object and bounce off instead

For example in periscopes, mirrors, water, etc.

Smooth surface

Rough surface

(reflects in the same direction)

(reflects in all directions)

REFRACTION

When the light travels from one medium into another (air- water). It passes through a medium with different density, it changes direction

For example: rainbow, lenses, fish bowl, etc.

El tercer número de la clave es...

HEAT

Heat vs. temperature

HEAT

TEMPERATURE

  • Electrical and chemical energy can be transformed into heat (artificial heat sources) and there are natural heat sources such as the sun. We also take heat from inside the Earth (geothermal energy)

States of matter

Expansion

As matter is heated it will expand. The particles around move faster

Heat can change the states of matter

Contraction

When an object is cooled molecules move slower and closer

The last key number is...

Cogratulations, you did it!

By mastering light, sound and heat you discovered the secret message: You are 96% CHON!!! CHON; carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O) y nitrogen (N), elements that bring life to our planet. Each of your cells is made of those elements. As a master of science, the future is now in your hands!

  • It travels in straight lines called rays
  • It doesn´ t need a medium to travel and can´t pass all materials

  • Light is faster than sound
  • It travels around 300.000 km/ s

1. Motorbike

2. Cleaning vacuum

3. Birds

Because in water, particles are closer together. Energy vibrations are passed quicker from one particle to another compared to air particles

  • Humans can only see a small amount of visible light
  • It appears white but it´s made up of many colors
  • The light can be absorbed, refracted or reflected in contact with objects

  • It' s thermal energy
  • Movement of particles within an object.
  • It flows from hot to cold
  • Measure of energy. It measures how hot or cold something is.
  • The higher the temperature is the faster the particles move
