Caddisflies build their homes with stuff they find.

Guilded Grubs?

Surviving to Adulthood

The larvae, or babies, use silk to glue their cases together.

Surviving to Adulthood

Caddisflies only build cases when they're a larva. Their case helps them survive until adulthood, which is when they metamorphosize into a winged adult.

Case by Case

As larvae (babies), caddisflies build cases to camouflage and hide from predatory dragonflies. As they grow, they add more material onto their case. In nature, they build with rocks, leaves, and sand.

Guilded Grubs?

Caddisflies build their cases with pieces of their environment. This ensures that they'll always have the perfect camouflage. When artist Hubert Duprat gave caddisflies gold and gems, look at the bejeweled cases they made!
