Basic pathway of Pain

Pain

  • Pain - an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage
    • The perception that results from nociception

Inflammatory pain

  • inflammatory pain - pain that arises when chemicals are released by damaged tissue

REFERRED pain

referred pain - sense of pain may be localized to a different part of the body than where the tissue damage occurred

Muscle FATIGUE

neuropathic pain - pain that arises when the damaged tissue is in the nervous system (central or peripheral)

Neuropathic pain

hyperalgesia

innocuous- (neutral/ otherwise harmless)

hyperalgesia - enhanced pain to a noxious stimulus (that is already normally painful)

noxious - (painful/ otherwise harmful)

Allodynia

allodynia - pain to an innocuous stimulus (that is not normally painful)

noxious - (painful/ otherwise harmful)

innocuous- (neutral/ otherwise harmless)

Hyperalgesia is a sensitization to existing pain, whereas allodynia is the emergence of new pain.

Allodynia
