WRITING THINGS DOWN IS A PROVEN TECHNIQUE OF REMEMBERING.
If you want to retain more of what you learn, make notetaking a habit. Not only does it also help with mental clarity, but it also helps your mind process information better.
BE THE DESIGNATED SCRIBE
As the PM, the team will expect you to take notes on the whiteboard during brainstorming activities, draw visuals or diagrams to visually represent the discussion, or draft written deliverables.
TYPE NOTES DIRECTLY INTO A SHAREABLE DOCUMENT.
This will hold you to a higher standard of note taking, and will also save time later so you don't have to transcribe notes from a notebook or private note into a shared document. Don't worry too much about the notes being perfect though; you can still reorganize the notes after the meeting before sending the link out to participants.
DELEGATE AS NEEDED
If you are a key stakeholder or subject matter expert and need to be highly engaged in the conversation, delegate the note taking to another participant beforehand.
TURN YOUR NOTES INTO USEFUL RESOURCES
Depending on the type of meeting and discussion, your meeting notes have the potential to become engaging resources or project documents that get shared beyond the meeting participants.
- This actually happened during an ELT riff on our foundational values!
RECAP SHORTLY AFTER
As soon as possible after the meeting, organize your notes or write a separate meeting recap. This should include all high importance items discussed, decisions made, follow-up action items, and people/deadlines.
