Viewpoint

Remember that form is art that is three-dimensional (3D) and has length, width, and depth. This art takes up space. You are going to make your guitar show form by drawing it from a side viewpoint. A viewpoint is the position or angle from which the viewer sees a subject.

Today we'll see movement in a different kind of abstract art where there is no subject, just elements repeating. We will look at the art movement, Op Art. It came after Post Impressionism (early 1900s), much later, in 1960-70s.

Op art is short for optical art and is an abstract art style that uses patterns, shapes, and colors to create a visual effect that tricks the eye. These effects often make the artwork look like it is moving even though it is created on a flat surface.

PA standard of 9.1.8 A since learners can know and use the elements and principles of each art form to create works in the arts and humanities. In this lesson, Art 7, 4.5, they create mixed-media art inspired by a cubist artist, Marc Chagall, who was studied earlier in the unit. PA standard 9.1.8 B C since learners continue to identify and use comprehensive vocabulary within each of the arts forms as they critique their art, or, with the art appreciation option, have the chance to critique the work "Three Musicians" by cubist Pablo Picasso instead of their own, and also works by fellow learners for extra credit. VA: Cr: 2.1.7a, since learners demonstrate persistence (over a 2-day project in this case) in developing skills with various materials, methods, and approaches in creating works of art or design. In Art 7 4.5, it is part 2 of a 2-day project where they learn chalk pastel techniques and apply colorful pastels to dried tissue paper and drawing from part 1 to show texture and emphasize important symbols drawn. I added options where, instead of copying the edio example Chagall artwork, Paris Through the Window, learners can choose to be inspired by Chagall's use of color, both arbitrary and meaningful, symbols, mixed media, and emphasis, as they show their own chosen colors and personal symbols for meaning in original views of people, places, and things important to them. I have found that encouraging them to personalize their artwork helps them move toward the next standard in critique, next lesson VA: Cr3.1.7a Reflect and explain important information about personal artwork in an artist statement or another format. It also helps with VA: Re. 7.2.7a, where they analyze multiple ways that images influence specific audiences. Everyone does this in the Critique lesson 4.6, but learners who choose art appreciation options, without needing to make the art, get more practice with this standard by having a chance (collapsible box) in edio) to analyze parts and views of the cubist painting by Picasso, showing many views of 3 musicians (and a poet) and their musical instruments, to state what they think the title of the art could be, and explain why, based on what they've noticed.
