Learn about drastic cold events despite regions' overall average temperatures rising throughout the years.

+ info

Ontario, Canada

In late Janurary 2026, a major cold wave brought chilling temperatures to Canada, with Kirkland Lake recording a low of -43.7°C (-46.7°F), the coldest in the area since 1984. At the same time, Canada's average temperatues have been rising, with a +2.4°C increase since 1948.

Texas, United States

In Feburary 2021, a historic cold wave caused 10+ million people to lose power and about 246 deaths in Texas alone. Yet, U.S. overall has warmed about +0.7°C to 1.0°C (1.73°F to 1.9°F) since 1895

Eastern China

A record-breaking, intense cold wave struck Eastern China in mid-December 2023, causing temperatures to drop to -40°C, leading to widespread transportation shutdowns and power shortages. Nonetheless, China has a warming rate of about 0.26°C per decade since 1951

Europe

In early 2018, a major cold wave brought temperatures as low as -20° C (-4°F) in parts of Europe and widespread snowstorms. Yet, long-term data shows that Europe has warmed by about +2°C compared to the late 1800s.

Southeastern Australia

Parts of southeastern Australia, such as New South Wales, recorded temperatures near -10°C (14°F) with unusually widespread frost and snow. At the same time, Australia's average temperatures has risen about +1.47°C since 1910.
