START

You are a top-tier communications engineer stationed at the Earth-Space Command Center. Humanity has established its first successful colony on Mars, but a massive cosmic electromagnetic storm just swept through the solar system. The storm scrambled the colony's primary relay antennas. The Mars colonists are safe, but their main transmitter is offline. All they could manage to fire off before total silence was a heavily encrypted, multi-part rescue signal. To save them, you must work through Earth's backup relay station. You need to decode their wave patterns, understand how to push a transmission through the dense, stormy atmosphere, and successfully read their digital distress beacon to know what supplies they need!

ACCEPT MISSION

The storm knocked out the wave generators. You must input the correct wave properties to fire up Earth's satellite dish.

Match the definitions to retrieve the code to the atmosphere chamber.
The number of waves that can pass a given point in one second.
Energy that travels through matter and includes sound waves is called a_______.
Material through which a wave travels.
A form of energy that travels through an empty space and includes, visible light, radio waves and x rays.

When the particles of the medium are displaced in a direction parallel to energy transport it is a________
When the transfer of energy in a motion that is perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling it is _______.
A wavelength is the distance between one crest and the next.
A loud sound has a low amplitude.

Now that the signal is powered, you need to configure the laser transmitter to punch through the thick, dust-filled Martian atmosphere without losing energy.

CHECK

The primary signal relay is still weak because the physical hardware is vibrating at the wrong frequency. You need to find a tool to stabilize the hardware. Find the Digital Tuning Fork.

To keep our signal from being absorbed by the Martian dust, we need a frequency that doesn't transfer energy to the atmosphere. Which color surface would naturally absorb the most energy?

black

Before sending the final pulse, you must look through the telescopic array to confirm the "Medium" the wave is traveling through. Find the broken lens fragment.
As you look through this glass fragment, the stars appear to shift or 'break' in a different direction. What is the name of this wave behavior where light bends as it enters a new medium?

refraction

Before the signal leaves Earth's vicinity, it must pass through the orbital relay satellites. One satellite is misaligned and needs a manual override code. Find the Handheld Satellite Controller.
This satellite uses electromagnetic waves to talk to Mars. Unlike sound waves, which require a medium like air or water to move, what can electromagnetic waves travel through that mechanical waves cannot?

Solid Steel Barriers

A Vacuum

Thick Planetary Clouds

Liquid Nitrogen

You need to calibrate the "shape" of the rescue signal to ensure the colonists' receivers can recognize it against the background noise of the cosmic storm. Find the Glass Prism.

The monitor is displaying the rescue signal, but it’s out of sync. To stabilize the link to Mars, you must calculate the precise wavelength of the transmission.
km
To ensure the message isn't "scrambled" by space noise, you must verify the encoding method used by the Earth-Space Command Center. Find the Old Data Reel (Analog Tape).
Your team is preparing the main transmission array, but the console prompts for confirmation of the signal type. You see an old reel-to-reel tape on the counter, a relic of early communications. Why is a Digital pulse essential for this rescue mission to Mars, instead of using an Analog signal like the one stored on this old tape? Digital signals travel at the speed of light, while analog signals travel much slower and cannot reach Mars in time. Digital signals use less power to generate, making them more efficient for long-distance transmissions. Digital signals are more reliable because they are composed of distinct pulses (1s and 0s) and do not break down or pick up background interference over extremely long distances. Digital signals can only be received by modern satellites, and using analog would cause older Mars base receivers to crash.
You’ve successfully pierced the atmosphere! The colony's automated distress beacon has sent back a pulse. You need to decode it.
refraction
has longer wavelengths
transmission
reflection
loses more energy in absorption
One final test to make sure you can send the message correctly. Be sure to write down your answers! You have to have the correct answers to get the correct code.
