Goods and services at home

What are some goods and services you find around your home?

Jake has a homework assignment. He needs to make a list of 3 goods and 3 services. Read the story and find out what goods and services Jake found around his home.

“I’m hungry!” Jake said. “Speaking of hunger, what are we eating for dinner?” “Mandi is going to make you a quick salad and then you can order pizza,” Dad said. “Good,” Jake said. “Thanks, Dad.” “Ok, so …babysitting. That is something that someone does for us, and she gets paid. So would that be a service?” “Yes, that is a service,” Izzy told him. “You’re getting better at this.” They heard Mandi come through the door. “Time for me to go to work,” Dad said. “I’ll see you kids tomorrow.” “Bye, Dad,” Jake and Izzy said. “Is Dad’s job a good or a service?” Jake asked Izzy. “Well, he cooks in a restaurant,” Izzy mentioned. “Hmm…he makes food for people. Food is a good, right?” “Yes, but you should list a certain food. Maybe something like at Dad’s restaurant.” “Chicken tenders!” Jake yelled. Izzy helped him spell the words as Mandi came into the room. They told her what Jake was working on.

“I’ll get you a snack before I leave for work,” Dad told them. “Mandi will be here soon.” Mandi was a high-school girl who lived down the street. She watched Jake and Izzy until their mom got home from work. “Babysitting…is that a good or a service?” Jake wondered. “Hold on,” said Izzy. “We didn’t answer your question about organizing.” “Oh. Okay, well, I need help organizing my papers. Papers are things that I can hold, so that means they must be goods.” “Not exactly,” Izzy said. “You are right that goods are things you can have and touch. But do you need papers, or do you need help keeping your papers together?” “I definitely do NOT need more papers,” Jake said. “I need help keeping them neat and off the floor.” “Okay, then “organizing people’s stuff” is more like a job, right?” “Yeah. Oh, so that makes it a service.” “Right,” Izzy said. “Make sure you write that on the “services” list.” “I will write it down now,” Jake said.

“Hey, I just thought of something,” Jake said. “The food is a good, but isn’t cooking in a restaurant a service?” “Yeah, that would work,” Mandi said, and Izzy agreed. “Now I need two more goods.” “Remember that goods are things you can touch or see. They are mostly things that you can buy or trade,” Mandi reminded him. “Your home is full of things that someone bought.” “I need to get my homework done, too,” Izzy said. “But you can still ask me for help if you need it.” They worked quietly for a while. Then Jake yelled out, “cell phones and pizza!” “What was that about?” Izzy said. “You scared me!” “Sorry!” Jake replied. “I was thinking about what Dad said about ordering dinner. You need a cell phone to order pizza. That’s two more goods for my list!” He wrote them down excitedly.

“My homework is going to take forever,” Jake said to his older sister as they walked home from school. “We have to make a list of goods and a list of services. And we need three of each.” “That doesn’t sound too hard,” Izzy said. “That’s because you’re in fourth grade,” Jake told her. “I’m only in second. You know more than I do.” “Okay. Then maybe I can help you with it. Show me the paper from your teacher when we get home.”

At home, Jake emptied his backpack at the kitchen table. He dug around for a little while. “Here it is,” he said to Izzy. He handed his sister a sheet of paper. “What happened to this paper?” she asked him. “It looks like someone stepped on it.” “That’s because they did,” Jake replied. “I dropped it on the floor when we were getting ready to go home. Three people walked across it before I could pick it up.” Izzy and Dad smiled at each other. “Sounds like you could use some help getting organized,” Dad told him. “Hey, is that a good or a service?” Jake asked. “I’ll write it on my paper.” “Let’s figure it out,” Izzy said.

“My homework is done!” Jake announced. “Time for TV and pizza. Making a list of goods and services was hard work. It made me hungry.” “Everything makes you hungry,” Izzy told him. “That is true,” Jake said. “I wonder if I could get paid to eat. That would be a great job!” “I don’t think that’s a service anyone really needs,” said Mandi. “Okay,” said Jake, shrugging. “Then I’ll stick to eating for free.”
