THE UNIVERSE

The Universe has many celestial bodies: galaxies, planetary systems, stars, planets, satellites and asteroids.

THE UNIVERSE

There are two types of celestial bodies.

Planets, satellites, asteroids: they don’t give light. They get light from stars.

Stars: they give light.

STARS, PLANETS AND SATELLITES

THE UNIVERSE

Most astronomers believe the Universe began with a huge explosion called the Big Bang about 14 billion years ago.

THE MILKY WAY AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM

A galaxy is a group of stars and planetary systems. Our galaxy is called The Milky Way.

A planetary system is a star with planets and other celestial bodies that orbit around it. Our planetary system is called the Solar System because the Earth and 7 other planets orbit around a star called the Sun.

THE EARTH MOVES. REVOLUTION

The Earth takes 365 days (1 year) to orbit the sun.

The Earth moves around the Sun.This movement is called revolution.

The Earth is tilted. Some parts get more sun and others get less sun.

This produces the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

THE MOON.

The Moon is the Earth's satellite.

The Moon also spins and it takes about 28 days to spin.

The Moon goes around the Earth and it takes about 28 days.

So, we always see the same side of the Moon.

THE PHASES OF THE MOON.

Satellites do not emit light. The Moon looks bright because the Sun shines on it. The Moon moves around the Earth. Sometimes we see all, some, or none of the Moon.

THE EARTH MOVES. ROTATION

The Earth spins. This movement is called rotation.

The Earth takes 24 hours to spin once.

This makes day and night.
