Physical Development in Adolescence

What if the behaviors we label as "Lazy," "distracted," or "emotional" are actually the direct result of rapid physical changes happening beneath the surface? How might our teaching shift if we understood what thier bodies are going through as clearly as we understand out lesson plans!?

Objectives

Objective 11.1 Discuss when puberty happens and how it affects boys and girls, including differences across ethnic and cultural groups. Objective 11.2 Explain how changes in the adolescent brain relate to changes in their thinking and cognitive abilities. Objective 11.3 Describe the effects of sexual development and explain why sex education is important for adolescents. Objective 11.4 Identify adolescents’ health and nutrition needs, and explain common health concerns during this stage. Objective 11.5 Identify major threats to adolescent well‑being and describe ways to prevent or reduce these risks.

@rubybates6502 " 2 years ago When I got mine at 11, I just cried, felt ashamed, told my mother, had to listen to her freak about how I was "too young" (which is literally not even true), felt 10000x worse about her saying that to me, got no pain meds or nice food, literally just got told where the pads were and was told to skip a day even though I didn't wan't to. Btw, I didn't get the sex talk or anything because she just assumed I already knew... -_- I basically learned everything I learned from the period booklet that our school gave us. Mothers, teach your daughters about this stuff without acting all weird or like they have lost some part of their innocence or whatever. Its literally just an annoying part of life, it's not that hard to talk about and it could save your daughters a lot of future pan and self-worth issues.'

What is puberty

Key term: Puberty - Biological process leading to sexual maturity - Involves hormones, growth, emotions, and body shape - Affected by social and physical contexts

The social enviroment of puberty

Key idea: Context matters- family warmth & low conflict = later, healthier puberty - stressful homes or presence of unrelated adult males= earlier puberty - severe stress (war, truama)= delayed puberty Adolescence feel 'on stage' : imagenary audience judging appearance

Biology of puberty Key term: hormones, endocrine system

  • Hormones: chemical messengers which affect growth, mood, sleep, appetite, sexual arousal
  • produced by glands in the endocrine system
  • Estrogen increases in girls, testrosterone increases in boys
  • hormonal surges= emotional changes

Physical changes (key terms: Growth spurt)

  • Growth spurt - rapid gain in height and weight
  • Primary Sexual Characteristics- reproductive organs (ovaries, uterus, vagina, penis, and scrotum)
  • Secondary Sexual Characteristics- noticeable on the outside of the body (breast development, body/facial hair, voice tone, etc.)
  • changes in body composition= distribution of fat and growth of muscles
  • Changes in respiratory and circulatory systems= gretear strength and endurance

Why do you think puberty feels so different for every person, even though the biological process is the same?

puberty Timing & secular Trend

  • girls start about 2 years earlier than boys
  • puberty is happening earlier each generation, influenced by nutrition, health, enviroment. But this trend is slowing down, ages are no longer dropping as quickly
  • Height increases across generations are also leveling off

JAMA pediatrics is a systematic review + meta‑analysis of studies from 1977–2013, showing that girls’ breast development (Tanner Stage 2) has been occurring earlier by about 0.24 years per decade.

How might a stressful home environment change the timing of puberty?

cultural &ethnic diffrences

Key idea: culture and ecenomics shape when puberty begins - African American & Hispanic girls: earlier breast development (8–9) - Asian adolescents: later puberty - Poverty delays puberty due to poor nutrition

psychological impact

- Physically mature before emotional maturity - Hormonal rise → risk of depression, aggression - Timing affects self‑esteem & social experiences The Journal of Adolescent Health (2024) — Emotional & Behavioral Impact of Early Puberty found that - Early‑maturing adolescents show more internalizing symptoms (sadness, worry, withdrawal). -They also show more externalizing behaviors (acting out, risk‑taking). - Neighborhood poverty and stress amplify these effects.

Do you think teens today face more psychological pressure during puberty than previous generations?

Early vs. Late Maturation

  • Early boys: popular, athletic → risk of depression, delinquency
  • Late boys: creative, tolerant → lower self‑esteem
  • Early girls: anxiety, eating disorders, pregnancy risk
  • Late girls: fewer problems → may feel “behind”
Key idea: Timing brings both advantages and challenges, especially for girls.

Which group do you think has it harder: early‑maturing girls or early‑maturing boys? Why?

Body image

Perception of one’s body; shaped by media ideals Girls: more dissatisfaction as bodies change Boys: want more muscle Cultural pressure → anxiety, dieting, low self‑worth Key idea: Media ideals make many adolescents feel they don't measure up.

Frontiers in Psychology (2023) — “Social Media and Body Dissatisfaction in Young Adults” found that:Viewing idealized Instagram images increases body dissatisfaction within minutes. Viewing body‑diverse images actually reduces dissatisfaction. Upward social comparison (comparing yourself to “better” bodies) is the strongest predictor of negative mood.

What can you do as a teccher to grow self image and avoid self dissatisfaction?

Cultural diffrences in body image

- Hispanic teens: most dissatisfied - African American teens: most positive - Asian teens: fewer gender differences - Timing of puberty affects body image differently by culture Key idea: body imahe is cultural, whats valued varies across groups.

Brain development

Key terms: Myelination, Synaptic pruning, Corpus callosum, Limbic system, Prefrontal cortex - Myelination → faster processing - Pruning → efficient connections - Corpus callosum → integration - Limbic system matures early → emotion, risk‑taking - Prefrontal cortex matures later → judgment - Mismatch → impulsive behavior key idea: Teens feel emotions intensely before their reasoning skills fully catch up.

Health, Nutrition & Well‑Being

  • Nutrition affects puberty timing and health
  • Body dissatisfaction → dieting, eating disorders
- Anorexia nervosa: refusal to eat while denying that their behavior and skeleton like appearance are unsual. 10% starve themselves to death, - Blumia: disorder in which people binge on large quantities of food. includes purging induce vomiting.
  • Threats to well being: smoking, alcohol, drugs, unsafe sex
  • Prevention: education, supportive adults, positive peers

CDC reports that : Sleep behaviors on an average school night:The percentage of students who got at least 8 hours of sleep decreased. The percentage of Hispanic students who got at least 8 hours of sleep decreased. The percentage of Black students who got at least 8 hours of sleep decreased.
