What is one really important thing that nurses, especially psychiatric nurses need to have?
Education and Experience
-Students don't get enough adequeate education when it comes to psychiatric and mental health in nursing schools compared to other specialties. -They need more clinical experience in order to be adequeatly prepared and be more likely to choose psych nursing as their specialty. One really important but simple thing that nurses need to learn is sympathy/empathy. -These nurses need to learn how to keep negative views outside of the workplace and be self-aware. This can be difficult which is precisely why more education on this specialty in nursing school is so important.
Studies indicate that, “one of the most demanding clinical settings that nursing students encounter is psychiatric nursing. Preparing students for preclinical exposure is one of the most crucial strategies to reduce their stress. This can be accomplished by creating various scenarios that mimic real-world events and connecting theoretical lecture themes with lab simulations. Staff educators can also direct students toward competent skills and help them become self-aware” (Yaghmour et al., 2025).
Burnout among Nurses
-The lack of psychiatric nurses in the field is leading to wide burnout among nurses. This is because of lack of help and resources leading to not enough pay for the amount of workload they have. -These nurses are under so much emotional stress and people don't understand the incredible impact that they have. -Mental health resources and people need to be available in order to ensure the well-being of those with mental health disorders.

Stigma Aroung Mental Health
-People with mental illnesses are just like anyone else with a physical illness. They are still in pain and need resources available to them. -If nurses take incorrect and negative pre-conceptions about those with mental illness into the field that can be very dangerous to the patient and not be helpful to them at all. -Here is an example of an incorrect misconception; that all people with mental health disorders are dangerous or are exaggerating how they feel. This is fully wrong. These nurses need to have empathy and be able to have an open mind and provide equal care.
"A central theme of stigma of mental illness is a perception that persons with mental illness are dangerous, unpredictable, incompetent and unlikeable….As long as this stigma exists, the possibility of consumers of mental health services receiving optimal care is severely diminished, as is the vision of psychiatric mental health nursing as a satisfying, worthwhile area of practice” (Hunter et. al., 2014.
What do you think the percentage of nursing students that choose psychiatric nursing as their specialty is?
What is stigma in the context of mental health and psychiatric nursing?
Importance of Growth
-Psychiatric nursing specializes in mental health. These nurses work and provide accessible resources for those in need so that people have options available and don’t make decisions that they might regret. -They provide mental health care/support for so many people and are often overworked because there aren’t enough nurses in the field. -Psychiatric nursing is extremely important and is a very niche discipline because of the stigma around the topic of mental health. -If we stop caring about the field then an even larger epidemic is going to happen which will result in many tragedies. -Psychiatric nursing is so vital to the community and people tend to overlook the important differences that they can make. -What's not mentioned enough is that it is such a rewarding career and can really impact someone’s life. -The proper education and stigma-reducing measures will allow the field to start growing again and for more nursing students to choose psychiatric nursing as their specialty.
Psychiatric nursing wasn't even official until the late 1800s and not recognized by the National Mental Health Act until the mid 1900s (bns.institute).
