Inheritance LAB

In this lab, you will learn how traits are passed from parents to offspring. You will explore how dominant and recessive traits work and investigate what traits an offspring might have based on parent genes.

Start

What Are Genes?

Genes are instructions inside your DNA that determine your traits. Traits are characteristics like eye color, hair type, or height. Each person gets:

  • One gene from their mother
  • One gene from their father
Some traits are dominant (show up more often). Some traits are recessive (hidden unless both genes match)

Warm UP

Let's start with a warm up question.

STEP 1: ask a question

Now that you know about the cell parts and mitochondria, let's ask our question for this lab.

How do parent genes affect the traits their children will have?

STEP 2: Make your Hypothesis

STEP 3: Test and OBSERVE

Step 4:Analyze Results

STEP 5 : Make a conclusion

The Answer!

WHEN PARENT GENES COMBINE....
Why?
The children can have different traits depending on the genes.
  • Each parent passes one allele.
    • Children receive one allele from each parent, forming a pair.
  • Alleles combine to form genotypes.
    • Possible combinations include BB, Bb, or bb.
  • Dominant alleles mask recessive alleles.
    • If a dominant allele (B) is present, the dominant trait will appear.
  • Recessive traits require two copies.
    • Recessive traits require two copies (bb).
.

Because each parent passes down one allele, the combination of those alleles determines the child’s genotype and which trait is expressed.

Understanding genes helps explain why I have __________ because __________.

Great Job!

Analyze Results

Analyzing results means examining the data to identify patterns or trends. You determine what the evidence shows and how it relates to your question.

Ask A Question

Asking a question means identifying a problem or idea you want to investigate. The question should be specific and able to be answered through observation.

Make a Conclusion

Making a conclusion means summarizing what the data supports. You explain whether the evidence agrees with your hypothesis.

Test and Observe

Testing and observing involves collecting data through careful observation. You examine evidence and record what happens during the investigation.

Make a Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a reasonable prediction based on prior knowledge or observations. It explains what you think will happen before testing begins.
