Lost at the Fair
The day it happened was just an ordinary day.
My sister and I loved the fair that our parents took us to every year. We raced towards the bright, twinkling lights as they beckoned. We inhaled the delicious scent of usually forbidden foods, such as candy floss and hot dogs. The promise of an unforgiving winter had already arrived, although it was still September. If we tried hard enough, you could make out our breathy signatures in the night air.
The excitement was just too much for me. It had been drilled into me to stay safe. We were not to wander too far away, but the sights and sounds were just too enticing. Rides tempted me closer, making me giddy with their speed. Crowds thronged and bustled. The repetitive, slightly eerie music called me to listen. Before long, I could no longer see anyone I knew. The faces surrounding me were unfamiliar. Alien. I was lost.
I tried to swallow down my panic as I gazed around frantically. Faces swam before me and lights blurred my vision. I blinked and tried to take a breath. Just then, it felt like the world was closing in on me. Terrified, I gasped for air as I stumbled among the crowds, desperate to see a familiar face. My heart thumped in my chest and my breathing quickened. My eyes darted from one direction to another. Surely they must be somewhere! Suddenly, as I looked down, my eyes halted on an old, worn pair of pointed, leather boots…
“Are you lost, my little one?” a voice said. I gazed upwards. There in front of me was an elderly woman, dressed in black from head to toe. My eyes widened in fright and I staggered backwards. “N-n-no,” I stammered. Turning and running, I found myself even further concealed in the crowd. I was unable to see properly. I could not breathe. I lurched to a stop as a cold pair of hands grabbed me from behind. I gasped.
Spinning around, I was wild with fear. I tried desperately to wriggle out of their clutch until realising… it was my dad. “There you are,” he said kindly. Sobbing with relief, I threw my arms around his neck. I breathed in his familiar, reassuring smell. I was safe.
