The Historical Jesus Exploring the historical evidence for the existence of Jesus. Christian faith is rooted in history. Most historians agree that Jesus Christ was a real person in the first century. What evidence supports this? Texts like the Gospels and writings from Josephus and Tacitus mention Jesus outside religious texts. These sources provide historical context and attest to his existence and crucifixion.

Start

Birth of Jesus (c. 4–6 BC) Most historians agree that Jesus Christ was born during the rule of Herod the Great, a Roman client king of Judea. The Gospels situate Jesus within the vibrant and complex world of Roman Judea, a land marked by diverse cultures and political tensions.

c. 27–36 AD – Public Ministry Jesus starts his public teaching. Nobody knows what he was doing before this. He calls people to repentance and preached the coming Kingdom of God. He shared parables and teachings that emphasised love, forgiveness, and humility. His ministry included set-piece teaching, parables, healings, and exorcisms. He gained followers and provoked opposition.

c. 30-36 AD – Crucifixion Roman sources confirm that Jesus was executed by crucifixion under Pontius Pilate. Crucifixion was designed to serve as a warning to others and to maintain order. The execution of Jesus marked a significant event in history, influencing religious beliefs and cultural traditions worldwide.

"93 CE – Josephus Mentions Jesus" Jewish historian Flavius Josephus refers to “James, the brother of Jesus who is called Christ.” This is one of the earliest non-Christian references to Jesus.

c. 116 AD – Tacitus Records Jesus’ Execution Roman historian Tacitus mentions Jesus in his Annals, stating: “Christus suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of Pontius Pilate.” This provides historical validation of Jesus' crucifixion. This is one of the earliest non-Christian references to Jesus, supporting the historical existence of Christ and his execution under Roman authority.

"Why the Historical Jesus Matters" For Christians, history and faith are deeply connected. Studying the historical Jesus helps us understand the roots of a faith that changed the world.
