Topic 1

Understanding time and priorities

Transition and Time Awareness

It is true...there will be less structure and guidance than in high school.

Time management is not something that your college professors are going to teach you. Just know, your work will take more time than you are used to. This is going to require you to self-manage your time. Self-managing your time first requires time awareness. Ask yourself this question ... How do you think you spent the majority of your time yesterday? What did you do? Now check your screen time from yesterday :) There will be a discussion board on Canvas asking you to respond to this question.

Identifying priorities

Plain and simple...there are things you must do vs. things you would rather do.

Certain tasks are more urgent than others in a clear way. For example, the homework that is due at midnight vs. the homework assignment that is due in a week. Even if the assignment a week away is easier, the assignment due at midnight must take priority. Complete the interaction on the right side of your screen. Put the action of top priority at the top and the action with the lowest priority at the bottom.

Planning and Scheduling

Planning Tools

There are multiple forms of planning.

Choosing the right planning tool for you is very individualized. Some prefer a physical planner to write in all of their due dates. If you do not like writing or think you may even lose the planner, a digital planner may be for you. Your phone has a built-in calendar app that could be utilized. If you need something even simpler, Canvas has a calendar section that shows you daily what is due. You can even add assignments to that calendar. Which planner do you think will work best for you? Answer on the left of your screen.

Weekly Planning/Time Blocking

Learning how to effectively block out your time can be tricky.

Building your schedule around your classes will be most effective, since the time of those classes will never change. On the next slide, there is a sample time blocked schedule by the hour.

Procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing something.

Procrastination is something we are all too familiar with. Some things that cause procrastination are...

Breaking Down Tasks/Chunking

Chunking is the act of making a bigger task easier by breaking it down into smaller pieces.

For example, when writing a big research paper you may start with research, then make an outline, then start drafting, then edit that draft, and then finalize your paper. You do not automatically just write a ten-page research paper; you break it into chunks.

Habit Building Takes Time!

It is better to be consistent, rather than perfect. Start small when building habits, even working on one habit you want to implement at a time will help. For example...
  • Create a plan for the week on Sunday
  • Add one extra hour of homework time on Mondays
