L'inizio del viaggio...
Marco Polo era un mercante veneziano che, nel 1271, partì insieme al padre e allo zio.
Venezia era il fulcro del commercio marittimo ma i Polo puntarono verso l'ignoto Oriente.
Marco Polo aveva come obiettivo di raggiungfere la corte del Gran Khan in Cina
L'Impero Mongolo viveva un periodo di relativa stabilità e quindi erano più sicuri i viaggi.
La Via della Seta era una vasta rete di percorsi carovanieri e marittimi.
Questi percorsi collegavano l'Europa e il Mediterraneo all'Asia Centrale e alla Cina.
Si commerciava non solo Seta, ma anche spezie, porcellana, pietre preziose, carta e polvere da sparo.
La Via della Seta fu il veicolo per la diffusione di religioni come il: Buddhismo, l'Islam e il Cristianesimo.

Dopo 3 anni di viaggio i Polo arrivarono alla residenza dell'Imperatore mongolo Kublai Khan nipote di Gengis Khan. Marco divenne consigliere fidato e rimase in Cina per circa 17 anni.

"IL MILIONE" E IL RITORNO A VENEZIA
Marco Polo tornò a Venezia nel 1295, fu catturato dai Genovesi durante una battaglia navale. In prigione dettò le sue memorie ad un compagno di cella, Rustichello da Pisa. Il libro divenne famoso come: "Il Milione". Per anni fu l'unica fonte di informazion sull'Asia.
